Our purpose
The UK Growth & Race Equity Team exists to help Scouting grow sustainably across all communities in the UK and to champion race equity so that Scouting is genuinely open, welcoming and inclusive for young people and adult volunteers from every background.
By focusing on both growth (bringing Scouting to more young people) and race equity (removing barriers that limit participation) the team works to improve representation and opportunity in Scouting for all.
What we do
The UK Growth & Race Equity Team supports Scouts across the UK by leading and enabling work that drives sustainable membership growth and strengthens race equity. This includes:
- Supporting membership growth strategies, helping Lead Volunteers and teams plan, deliver and sustain increased membership in their communities.
- Collaborating with staff and volunteers to develop and implement practical actions that help local areas open new sections, recruit volunteers, and embed inclusive approaches.
- Championing race equity, working to ensure Scouts actively addresses inequities so that young people and adults from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds can fully participate, thrive and see themselves reflected in Scouting.
- Informing plans and resources, contributing insight and evidence to improve materials, tools and guidance that support growth and inclusive recruitment.
- Engaging with local and national partners, acting as advocates for sustainable, community-driven approaches that connect Scouts with under-represented groups.
Direct support for volunteers
We also provide direct support to volunteers and teams through:
- Practical guidance and advice on implementing growth plans in local Scouting contexts.
- Participation in planning meetings, workshops and discussions that guide growth and equity efforts across UK Scouting.
- Collaboration with volunteer leaders and staff colleagues to design and refine tools and resources that help local teams deliver inclusive membership growth.
- Supporting the Race Equity Project Board and race equity initiatives, encouraging volunteers from diverse backgrounds to shape and influence this work.
