National Walking Month (May)
Enjoy the lighter evenings and get outside during National Walking Month.
Activities to try:
- Play a game of walking football.
- Find out which sandwiches and snacks stay the freshest while going on a walk.
- Explore your local area with Wild walk.
May Day (Fri 1 May)
May Day marks the beginning of summer, and has been celebrated since the Romans.
Activities to try:
- Create a community garden
- Try stave dancing
- Create a colourful bouquet in Fascinating flowers
Vesak (Fri 1 May)
Vesak is also known as Buddha Day. It's a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha.
Activities to try:
World Laughter Day (Tue 3 May)
A perfect time to celebrate the joy and positivity that laughter brings to our lives. Laughter helps build connections, reduce stress, and create happy memories—so let’s get giggling!

Star Wars Day (Mon 4 May)

Screen-Free Week (Mon 4 to Sun 10 May)
Feeling like you are glued to your phone or computer? Why not have a screen-free week with some activities to get you active and outdoors.
Activities to try:
- Take on a screen-time switch off challenge
- Go on a treasure hunt or gratitude scavenger hunt
- While you're outside, discover lots of new natural features

World Password Day (Thurs 7 May)
This is World Password Day, a great opportunity to teach young people about the importance of online safety and creating secure passwords.
Activities to try:
- Practise making stronger passwords
- Explore what makes a good password with Strong password, weak password
- Help young people recognize scams and protect their personal information online with Go Phish
World Fair Trade Day (Sat 9 May)
Fairtrade Day celebrates and supports small-scale farmers, producers and their families to help create sustainable communities.
Activities to try:
- Make fair-trade campfire bananas
- Visit a farm near you with Top of the crops
- Think about where we get our food from with Go where it grows
National Doughnut Week (Sun 10 to Mon 18 May)
A delicious way to explore creativity and have fun while learning new skills. Whether you’re cooking, crafting, or experimenting, there’s a doughnut-inspired activity for everyone!
Activities to try:
- Whip up some tasty treats with Cook camp stove doughnuts
- Get hands-on and crafty with Foam dough
- Explore science and technology by making conductive dough
Mental Health Awareness Week (Mon 11 to Sun 17 May)
A time to focus on well-being, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Let’s support young people in building resilience and practicing self-care.
Activities to try:
- Open up conversations about feelings and well-being with We don’t talk about Bruno – we do talk about you.
- Get creative and connect with others through Run a craft event to promote good mental health.
- Find calm and balance while having fun with Try some animal yoga.
International Day of Families (Fri 15 May)
A time to celebrate the diversity, love, and support that families bring to our lives. Let’s explore the meaning of family and strengthen our connections.
Activities to try:
- Learn about different families.
- Reflect on personal growth and family connections by creating a Tree of Life.
- Celebrate the family of Scouts with Make a nature World Membership Badge.

International Day of Light (Sat 16 May)
The International Day of Light celebrates light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development. It's held on the anniversary of the first successful operation of a laser.

World Baking Day (Sun 17 May)
A day to celebrate all things baking! Try a new recipe or bake an old favourite.

International Museum Day (Mon 18 May)
International Museum Day has a different theme each year, to celebrate the value that museums bring to our communities.
Activities to try:

World Bee Day (Wed 20 May)
The purpose of World Bee Day's to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.
Activities to try:
- Build a bee hotel
- Play a fun, nectar collecting game with Honey makes the world go round
- Dance like a bee with Waggle dancing
International Tea Day (Thurs 21 May)
This day aims to raise awareness of the long history and cultural significance of tea around the world.

Shavuot (Thurs 21 to Sat 23 May)
Shavuot is an important festival in the Jewish calendar, which celebrates God giving the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai.
Activities to try:
- Explore how someone puts their faith into practise with Faith feathers

Eid al-Adha (expected evening Tues 26 to Sat 30 May)
Eid al-Adha is a special Muslim festival that remembers the story of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and his family. Muslims from all over the world finish their pilgrimage called Hajj in Makkah by following in the footsteps of Prophet Abraham and his family. On this day, Muslims pray, share food, give to people in need, and celebrate with family and friends.
Activities to try:
- Bake baklava.
- Make a date shake.
- Make some lanterns.
