Operation
National honours and other external recognition awards are awarded on merit, for exceptional achievement or commitment to service to Britain and recipients will generally have made life better for other people or be outstanding at what they do.
The NAAG (through the NHSG) aims to spread awareness and increase the number of nominations made and successful awards given out for adults, deserving young people and Groups who contribute to their communities through and in addition to their activity within the Scouts.
- Appointed Chair (who is a member of the NAAG) responsible to the Chair of the NAAG.
- Additional experts or Headquarters team members may be co-opted for additional support.
- The Chair of the NAAG is an ex-officio member and has right of attendance to any meeting.
- Provide guidance with nominations.
- Liaise with UK headquarters to understand and support nominations for headquarters Staff and National Volunteers.
- Be a point of contact for County/Area/Regional/Chief Commissioners to discuss possible national honour nominations and process best practice.
- Provide encouragement and support for County/Area/Regional Local Awards Advisory Groups (where in place) to explore and consider nominations for national honours and other national awards.
- Form a relationship with the Lord Chamberlain’s Office to plan for success with any nationally submitted nominations.
- Encourage and provide support for other external recognition both locally and nationally for individual, Group, District, County/Area/Regional success.
- The Chair of the NHSG will provide a progress and status report for each NAAG meeting.
1. The NHSG will meet regularly (at least every four months) and in response to additional submissions for national awards that require UK headquarters support or guidance.
2. Members of the NHSG will be available to support those who nominate others for national honours and other forms of external recognition, in order to achieve maximum success.
3. The NHSG will consider nominations from the NAAG that are deemed suitable for consideration for national honours and agree on those most appropriate for further consideration.
a. NHSG members will require access to citations in order to consider the strength of the nomination.
4. The NHSG will support the Scouts locally in connecting with local Lord Lieutenants and Deputy Lieutenants advising on the process and what information is required to submit a nomination.
5. The NHSG via the NHSG Chair and the Chair of the NAAG will liaise with UK headquarters for all supported nominations and in addition to add any support to national nominations from the Chair of the UK Trustee Board, Team UK and Chief Executive.
6. The NHSG will ensure information available locally (via the Scouts website) is correct.
7. The NHSG will provide a report via the NHSG Chair to all NAAG meetings. This will include an update on:
a. NAAG suggested nominations from Silver Wolf & Bar to the Silver Acorn reviews.
b. Known local nominations made outside NAAG Silver Wolf & Bar to the Silver Acorn reviews.
c. Known UK headquarters nominations made.
