Working with People

Working with People is one of the six core skills for Managers and Supporters in Scouting.

Objectives

  • Develop good working relationships with adults in local Scouting based on trust and Scout values as embodied in the fundamentals of Scouting.
  • Manage succession planning and identify the roles that are needed to make local Scouting work effectively and recruit suitable people into those roles.
  • Allocate tasks to people within local Scouting and monitor the progress of those tasks.
  • Support adults in local Scouting to develop by completing formal training requirements, learning on the job, trying out new skills and addressing problems affecting performance.
  • Build a team spirit in local Scouting and support the development of the team as a whole.
  • Address conflict as it occurs within local Scouting and reduce the likelihood of it happening through good communication and other methods.
  • Run effective team meetings and participate fully in the local Executive meetings.
  • Ensure that adults in local Scouting perform to agreed standards and if serious problems occur, the correct procedures are followed.
  • Appropriately acknowledge good work carried out in local Scouting (through local events and the national Scout adult award scheme).
  • Carry out effective reviews and re-assign or retire people if necessary.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with other relevant organisations (including sponsoring authorities where appropriate) in the local area.
