Back to Activities

You’ll need

  • Plates
  • Bowls
  • Something to catch drips (baking paper or foil)
  • Tea towel or heatproof gloves
  • Equipment to melt chocolate (see instructions)
  • Biscuit sticks
  • Chocolate
  • Toppings (cookie crumbs, nuts, popping candy or similar)

시작하기 전에 (Before start)

  • Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Additional help to carry out your risk assessment, including examples can be found here. Don’t forget to make sure all young people and adults involved in the activity know how to take part safely.
  • Make sure you’ll have enough adult helpers. You may need some parents and carers to help if you’re short on helpers
  • Check for any dietary requirements or allergies within your group before you begin.

Using a kitchen and preparing to cook

  • You could run our kitchen safety and hygiene activities, Kitchen risk bingo and Home kitchen hygiene prior to running this session.
  • Remember to have a hand washing station and set up a separate sink for handwashing, if you can. Take extra hygiene precautions when handling raw meat, such as regular hand washing, having separate equipment for raw and cooked meat, and washing up equipment as soon as it's been used. Take a look at our guidance on food preparation.
  • Make sure you have all the ingredients ready.
  • Remember to check your ingredients against any allergy or dietary requirements to ensure everyone can enjoy the recipe. This may mean using alternative ingredients.

준비해 (Get Ready)

Depending on who’s doing this activity, this section could be completed before you start the session by the person running the activity.

  1. Everyone should have a plate, tray, or sheet of foil or greaseproof paper in front of them to catch any drips or toppings
  2. Prepare the toppings, so that they can be sprinkled over the biscuit sticks. Crush nuts, crumble cookies, pour out sprinkles or popping candy, dice dried fruits and put them into bowls.
  3. Melt the chocolate.

There are several ways chocolate can be melted:

On the hob:

  • Break the chocolate into small chunks and place them into a glass bowl
  • Place the bowl on top of a saucepan of simmering water
  • Stir the chocolate until it’s completely melted
  • Remember, the glass bowl will be hot, so use heatproof gloves or a tea towel to remove it from the pan and leave it to cool on a heatproof surface

In the microwave:

  • Break the chocolate into small chunks and place them into a microwavable bowl
  • Put in the microwave and heat for 15 seconds
  • Stir the chocolate
  • Repeat the above 2 steps until the chocolate is completely melted
  • Remember, the glass bowl will be hot, so use heatproof gloves or a tea towel to remove it from the microwave and leave it to cool on a heatproof surface

당신의 빼빼로 만들기 (Make Your Pepero)

  1. The melted chocolate could be divided between the group into smaller bowls, or several bowls could be made, so everyone has access to one. Similarly, the toppings could be divided into smaller bowls for each group or table, or a toppings station could be made for people to go up to.
  2. Everyone should stand or sit in front of their plate, tray, or tinfoil or greaseproof paper.
  3. Give each person a biscuit stick.
  4. They should then dip their biscuit stick in the melted chocolate, leaving at least 3cm uncovered.
  5. Keeping the chocolate dipped biscuit stick over the plate/tray, people should sprinkle over the toppings of their choice.
  6. Place the biscuit stick on a lined tray or plate and let it set.
  7. These steps could be repeated for people to make a few biscuit sticks and change the toppings.

Reflection

This activity gave everybody the opportunity to try something new and develop their skills. You’ve made a popular snack in Korea, have you tried Pepero sticks before? What other food do you like that originates in another country? Are there any snacks you love to eat that other countries may not have heard of? There were different steps to making this, were they easy to make? Would you have a go at this activity again? Melting chocolate can be done in a few ways, which way did you choose? Did it work well or did you burn some of the chocolate?

Safety

All activities must be safely managed. You must complete a thorough risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Always get approval for the activity, and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.

Food

Remember to check for allergies, eating problems, fasting or dietary requirements and adjust the recipe as needed. Make sure you’ve suitable areas for storing and preparing food and avoid cross contamination of different foods. Take a look at our guidance on food safety and hygiene.

Fires and stoves

Make sure anyone using fires and stoves is doing so safely. Check that the equipment and area are suitable and have plenty of ventilation. Follow the gas safety guidance. Have a safe way to extinguish the fire in an emergency.

Cooking

Teach young people how to use cooking equipment safely. Supervise them appropriately throughout. Make sure it’s safe to use and follow manufacturers’ guidelines for use.

  • To make this activity more challenging, look for a recipe online and make your own biscuit sticks.
  • To make this activity easier, prepare all the ingredients before you begin
  • Remember to check your ingredients against any allergy or dietary requirements to ensure everyone can enjoy the recipe. This may mean using alternative ingredients.
  • You could use dairy free chocolate or make some caramel instead to stick the toppings to the biscuit sticks.
  • Remember to think about vegan and gluten free options, which can be accommodated too.

All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.

Look at other Korean snacks. Is there anything else you can make? There are some other activities from the Korean Jamboree that have been created. Have a look at our jamboree activities.

This activity gives young people the opportunity to use cooking skills and to share their jamboree adventures from the jamboree host country for 2023, which is South Korea.
