Controlled Medications
If you are taking a young person to camp who needs a controlled medication, it's important to keep that medication safe. You can do this by using a locked box that only a limited number of adults can open, and it should be stored in a secure place that is not easily accessible to others, but is quickly accessible in an emergency.
Make sure you have a written plan that is signed by the parent or guardian. This plan should explain how the medication will be given, how it will be stored, and what to do if the young person refuses to take it (for example, contact the parents right away and arrange for them to be picked up).
You also need to keep a record of every time the medication is given, noting the date, time, amount given, and how much is left in the container (eg; the number of items or the liquid level in the bottle). It’s best if two people help with giving the medication to make sure it is taken properly and to double-check the amount left.
The 6 rights (Rs) of medicines administration provide a helpful prompt:
• Right person.
• Right medicine.
• Right route.
• Right dose.
• Right time.
