Page last reviewed: September 2025

Supporting learning locally

Volunteer’s manage and track their learning through My Learning. They can also access the elearning through My Learning. For any learning that's delivered locally, they'll need to contact their Volunteering Development Team to find out how to register.

Lead Volunteers, Team Leaders, Volunteering Development Teams including volunteers with Trainer and Learning Assessor accreditations,  support volunteers to complete their learning and provide opportunities to develop skills, experience and knowledge.

Lead Volunteers and Team Leaders

You’ll support volunteers to complete their learning. If you lead a team, you’ll see your teams’ learning records and create learning reports to check how your team is getting on.

If volunteers are struggling to find the time to complete their learning, they could use existing time in the diary to prioritise getting the learning completed. This could be during a leader meeting, a Trustee Board meeting or by taking a break from section meetings.

Check in with the Volunteering Development Team to find out how learning’s is being delivered locally and how they can support members of your team to complete their learning.

Read Managing overdue learning  for tips and guidance on talking to volunteers about the learning they need to complete.

Use Data Explorer, in My Membership, to generate a report of the volunteers in your local area who haven’t accessed My Membership. They might need support to sign in before completing their learning. You’ll find the view within the Go-Live Dashboard.

Useful digital tool guides

Read Manage and assess learning digital tool guide to check my teams’ learning status, manage learning compliance overview and create a learning report.

Volunteering Development Teams

Each District and County/Area/Region(Scotland) has a Volunteering Development Team. Volunteers with Trainer and Learning Assessor accreditations are part of this team and together they:

  • organise and deliver learning locally,
  • help volunteers find and take part in opportunities for learning,
  • connect volunteers to learn and share best practice or challenges
  • credit learning for volunteers in My Learning
  • support volunteers to access their digital learning and help find alternatives for those volunteers that don’t have access to the internet.

Find out more about the role and responsibilities of the Volunteering Development Team.

Signpost volunteers to Scouts Digital Skills to help improve their Digital Skills.

Trainers and Learning Assessors

As a volunteer with a Trainer accreditation, you’ll deliver and facilitate Scouts learning.

The Volunteering Development Team will co-ordinate and organise Trainers to deliver learning opportunities.

Local learning opportunities are flexible, so that volunteers can access learning when they need it and as local as possible. This means Learning might be delivered for one or more Districts or for a County / Area / Region (Scotland) when required.

Volunteer's with the Learning Assessor accreditation, support and assess volunteers as they learn and credit learning for volunteers in My Learning.

Trainers check in with the Volunteering Development Team Leader and Members to help plan and deliver learning opportunities.

Learning Assessors connect with other Learning Assessors through your Volunteering Development Teams to share ideas and best practice.

You’ll find trainers notes and resources for the Scouts learning and guides to help you assess and credit the learning in My Learning.

Useful digital tool guides

Read Manage and assess learning digital too guide to learn about accessing trainer notes and guides to crediting learning.

Assign and credit learning

Growing Roots learning is automatically assigned to volunteers in My Learning and is shown on their profile in My Membership. Progress is tracked and recorded in My Learning. This means that Learning Assessors don’t need to assign or credit skills for this learning on a volunteer's profile.

First Response is automatically assigned to volunteers who are required to complete it. Learning Assessors will need to credit this skill once completed.

For Branching Out learning, volunteers need to assign the skills to their profile in My Learning. Learning Assessors can also assign skills to volunteer’s profiles.

Depending on the requirements for each skill, volunteers might need to:

  •  complete elearning, which is then automatically credited in My Learning.

  •  do something to show their learning and understanding, which will be assessed and the skill credited by a Learning Assessor.

Volunteers will need to request a skill assessment, through My Learning. Learning Assessors will find assessment requests in the ‘assess’ section of My Learning.

Read the Manage and assess learning digital tool guide to find out how to assign and credit skills.
