Race and ethnicity

Explore race and ethnicity and learn how we recruit and support people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

At Scouts, we’re all responsible for including people from all ethnicities and backgrounds. We follow our Scout Values by including everyone to make the world a better place.

Right now, Scouts doesn’t fully reflect the ethnic diversity of the UK. Some people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds have had negative experiences that made them feel Scouts isn’t a place for them. We know we need to do better, and we’re committed to making meaningful, lasting change.

That’s why we’re working to reach more young people and volunteers from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds - to share the joy of Scouts and reflect the UK’s diversity. Learn how our Race Equity Project Board is making this happen.

What can I do in my local area?

Explore the data

Check out the Local Scouting Dashboard to identify gaps in representation and better understand the diversity of the local community. This can help you plan more inclusive activities and reach out to underrepresented communities. For example, if your Group doesn’t reflect the diversity of your local area, you can use this data to make intentional changes - like adapting outreach efforts or making sure activities are inclusive of different cultural experiences. The dashboard empowers volunteers to take meaningful action towards inclusivity.
