UK Volunteering Journey Team Members

Join our UK Scouts volunteer team

Equal opportunities

Scouts is an equal opportunity recruiter. We're committed to diversity and actively seeking applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, in particular, Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

About the role

As a Volunteer Journey Team Member, you’ll play an important part in shaping how volunteers experience Scouting — from feeling valued and supported, to being confident and motivated in their role. Your work will help ensure volunteers have the right tools, recognition and support to deliver Skills for Life to young people across the UK.

You’ll join a friendly and committed team of volunteers who work in close partnership with staff colleagues to improve the volunteer experience at every stage. Depending on your interests and strengths, you’ll contribute to one of three focus areas:

  • Reward & Recognition – helping ensure volunteers feel appreciated, celebrated and valued for what they give

  • Volunteering Culture – supporting positive, inclusive and team-based volunteering across the movement

  • Problem Solving – helping identify and address common challenges in the volunteer journey, creating practical solutions that make volunteering easier

This role is ideal if you enjoy collaboration, care about volunteer wellbeing, and want to make a meaningful difference to how Scouting supports its people.

These teams are part of the wider UK Volunteering Team.

Key tasks

  • Support key initiatives by contributing to the design, development and delivery of projects that enhance the volunteer experience.
  • Share your expertise and ideas, bringing your skills, perspective and creativity to help shape practical solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow volunteers and staff colleagues, helping to build a positive, inclusive and supportive team environment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by sharing feedback, insight and learning to strengthen how we support volunteers.

Person specification

  • Understanding of the Scout volunteer experience, or experience from a similar volunteer-focused environment.
  • Experience of designing, developing or improving resources, ideally for a volunteer audience.
  • Familiarity with UK Scouts’ structures, policies and procedures (desirable).
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and manage multiple activities or initiatives effectively.
  • Clear and positive written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt your approach for different audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and creative thinking to improve activity and volunteer support.
  • Confidence using digital tools for communication, collaboration and project management.
  • Passionate about delivering a high-quality volunteer experience.
  • Collaborative and able to work effectively as part of a diverse volunteer team.
  • Proactive, self-motivated and comfortable taking initiative.
  • Adaptable and open to feedback, with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Open-minded, creative and willing to try new approaches.
  • Committed to the Scout Values of integrity, respect, care, belief and cooperation, and willing to model these in the role.

This role includes a range of tasks that need a realistic and ongoing time commitment, with flexibility around when those tasks are completed. If you already volunteer with Scouts, please take time to think about how this UK role would fit alongside any other roles you hold, and have a conversation with your current Team Leader before applying.

For some people, taking on a UK role may mean stepping back from, or handing over, another role so they can give each one the attention it deserves and have a positive and rewarding volunteering experience.

Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in line with UK Scouts Volunteer Expenses Policy.

UK Volunteering Journey Team

Thank you so much for your interest in joining the UK Volunteering Journey Team. I’m really pleased you’re considering being part of this work, as what we do makes a meaningful difference to every volunteer’s experience within Scouting.

Our team is dedicated to creating an excellent, supportive and inspiring volunteer journey - from the very first moment someone thinks about getting involved. Working closely with colleagues across Scouts’ teams, we design and develop resources that help attract and recruit new volunteers, ensuring they feel welcomed, supported and ready to get started.

We also play a key role in shaping and embedding team-based volunteering structures, making it easier for volunteers to collaborate, use their strengths and feel confident in their roles. This work underpins the positive volunteering culture we’re so proud of across the movement, and helps ensure volunteers receive consistent support through review processes and recognition schemes that make people feel genuinely valued.

If you decide to join us, you’ll be part of a friendly, motivated team who care deeply about improving the volunteer experience - so that everyone who gives their time to Scouting feels appreciated, supported and set up to succeed. I’m excited to welcome someone who shares this passion and wants to help shape the future of volunteering with us.
