Equal opportunities

Scouts is an equal opportunity recruiter. We're committed to diversity and actively seeking applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, in particular, Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

About the role

UK Scouts are committed to building a diverse and inclusive volunteer community with the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed. We want every volunteer to feel valued, supported and able to develop personally while making a meaningful contribution.

The UK Volunteer Development Team plays a key role in achieving this by supporting volunteers at every stage of their journey - from recruitment and induction, through ongoing learning and development, to reward and recognition. The team works to ensure that UK Scouts volunteers have a positive, well-supported experience that enables them to make their best contribution.

The UK Volunteer Development Team is part of the wider UK Volunteering Team.

Key tasks

  • Provide advice and guidance to Team Leaders throughout the UK Scouts recruitment process, including drafting role advertisements, shortlisting candidates and supporting interviews where required.
  • Deliver UK volunteer inductions, support Team Leaders to deliver role-specific inductions, and carry out follow-up check-ins with volunteers and Team Leaders.
  • Design and develop new tools, guidance and resources to support effective recruitment and induction.
  • Create and improve resources and approaches to reward, recognise and celebrate UK Scouts volunteers.
  • Contribute to wider UK Volunteer Development Team activities and projects as needed.

Person specification

  • Experience supporting recruitment, onboarding or welcoming new people into roles (this may be from volunteering, work, education or community settings).
  • Experience of sharing information with individuals or small groups, such as through inductions, briefings, mentoring or training.
  • An interest in, or experience of, recognising, rewarding and valuing people for their contributions.
  • Clear and positive verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt your approach for different audiences.
  • Comfortable using digital tools such as email, online documents and video calls (experience of Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint or Smartsheet is helpful but not essential — support and training will be provided).
  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a friendly, supportive virtual team.
  • Enjoys engaging with people and helping them feel welcome, supported and valued.
  • Able to offer encouragement, guidance and constructive feedback.
  • Open-minded, creative and willing to try new approaches.
  • Committed to the Scout Values of integrity, respect, care, belief and cooperation, and willing to model these in the role.
  • Able to commit around 2–3 hours per week, with flexibility to fit around other commitments.

This role includes a range of tasks that need a realistic and ongoing time commitment, with flexibility around when those tasks are completed. If you already volunteer with Scouts, please take time to think about how this UK role would fit alongside any other roles you hold, and have a conversation with your current Team Leader before applying.

For some people, taking on a UK role may mean stepping back from, or handing over, another role so they can give each one the attention it deserves and have a positive and rewarding volunteering experience.

UK Volunteer Development Team

We are a small but dedicated team supporting over 600 UK Scouts volunteers. Each team member brings different skills, experiences and interests, and we work flexibly so people can focus on the areas that suit them best.

Much of our work currently centres on recruitment, inductions and learning, and we’re excited to grow our support for rewarding and recognising UK Scouts volunteers. We meet once a month via Teams to share updates and track progress, with additional collaborative sessions held as needed to develop ideas, tools and resources for specific areas of our work.

As a virtual team, we have the opportunity to volunteer alongside people we might never otherwise meet, all while helping to ensure that volunteering with UK Scouts is valued, supported and enjoyable. We’re really looking forward to welcoming new team members and extending the support we can offer to volunteers across UK Scouts.
