About the role
We’re building a small team of volunteers who are passionate about helping Lead Volunteers to bring Scouting to more young people in their communities.
As a UK Growth Team member you will support the UK Lead Volunteer for Growth & Race Equity to carry out their role in providing strategic volunteer leadership on Scouts’ membership growth plans and activities. Members of the team will take on practical tasks, working with staff colleagues, to ultimately provide tangible support to the Lead Volunteers across the Movement so they feel confident, empowered and equipped to plan for and deliver sustainable membership growth within their communities.
We are looking for someone who has excellent communication skills and a friendly, approachable demeanour are essential, as you will be interacting with a diverse range of stakeholders, including volunteers, staff, and external partners.

This role is part of the wider UK Growth & Race Equity Team.

Key tasks
- Support the UK Lead Volunteer for Growth & Race Equity in delivering Scouts’ membership growth plans and strategies.
- Work closely with staff colleagues to implement practical actions that help Lead Volunteers plan and deliver sustainable growth in their areas.
- Attend and contribute to planning meetings, workshops, and strategic discussions on membership growth.
- Provide advice and insights to influence approaches, drawing on lived experience of Scouting or community work.
- Help design, review, and improve County Growth Plans and related local growth strategies.
- Contribute to the annual census process by offering feedback, ideas, and support for improvements.
- Assist in the creation and enhancement of resources, tools, and products that support local Scouting with growth and development.
- Liaise with the England Volunteering Development team to support newly appointed Lead Volunteers, ensuring they integrate and operate effectively.
- Engage with volunteers, staff, and external partners in a friendly and approachable way to foster collaboration and positive relationships.
- Promote and uphold the Scouts’ values, with a focus on race equity and inclusive growth opportunities.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in processes, communications, and support materials.
- Act as an advocate for sustainable, community-driven membership growth across the Movement.
Person specification
- Proven organisational and communication skills, gained in a professional, voluntary, or personal capacity.
- Experience or knowledge of The Scouts, particularly at County or Regional level, is advantageous but not essential.
- Understanding of membership growth challenges and opportunities within Scouts (desirable).
- Familiarity with the structure and working methods of the UK Scouts team (desirable).
- Ability to use data and evidence to inform continuous improvement and product development.
- Strong organisational skills, able to plan events, manage logistics, and drive delivery.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage a range of stakeholders.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with volunteers, staff, and external partners.
- Competence in using digital tools, particularly Office 365 (Outlook, MS Teams, etc.).
- Comfortable using social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook to communicate and share information.
- Enjoys providing practical support to volunteers.
- Collaborative approach to working with diverse people and teams.
- Willing to share personal knowledge and experiences of growing Scouts as a Lead Volunteer (or similar role).
- Passionate about helping bring Scouting to more young people.
- Availability of approximately 4–5 hours per week, with some time during the working day.
- Experience of volunteering with UK Scouts, with an understanding of growth strategies and volunteer support (desirable).
- Willingness to learn and adapt, with support from a mentor and named staff contact.
- Commitment to inclusive and equitable practices in Scouting.
