Air Activities Staged Activity Badge
Air Activities Staged Activity Badge

We’ve recently updated the requirements for this badge. Young people can work towards the old or new requirements until the 30 June 2026. From the 1 July 2026, young people must follow the new requirements on this page. You can find a copy of the old badge requirements in the ‘Tips’ section.
How to earn your badge:
Describe how a wing generates lift and the conditions that can cause an aircraft to stall.
Name the main control surfaces of an aeroplane and how they work.
Flight Time Calculation Test
Find out how long it’d take to fly 60 nautical miles at an airspeed of 90 knots in each of these conditions:
- No wind
- Headwind of 15 knots
- Tailwind of 30 knots
Use the formula: Time = Distance (Nautical miles) ÷ Speed (airspeed ± wind speed)
Complete any four of the following:
- Draw a diagram or make a model of an airfield and name the key features.
Explain the rules for accessing an airfield.
- Find out about unmanned aircraft, such as drones.
Understand why they might be used and discover the rules around flying them safely.
- Try out a flight simulator. This could be done online, on an app, on a computer game or as an immersive experience.
- Look at an online weather forecast and understand how different conditions (such as wind speed, visibility and cloud cover) impact flying.
How do standard weather forecasts differ from METAR reports?
- Know the role of an airfield marshal.
- Explore a place of aviation interest, such as an airfield, air display, aviation museum or through a virtual tour.
- Send and receive a message using the phonetic alphabet, then explain why it's used to communicate in aviation.
Tips
- There are free online flight simulators available, which would be sufficient for stage 3. Examples are listed in this external article.
- There are desktop flight simulator programmes available, such as Microsoft simulator and X-plane. Due to the cost of these, it would be worth purchasing at District level.
- A local aviation/aircraft museum or gliding club may have a flight simulator that you could access, or if you’re an RAF recognised Air Scout groups, you could ask your local ATC unit.
You can find the previous requirements for the Air Activities Staged Activity Badge in this document.
