Session summary
In this session you will learn how big the solar system is compared to the UK and then test some alien soil samples for signs of life.
Safety message
All activities must be safely managed. Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Do a risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Always get approval for the activity and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.
- Supervise young people when they’re online and give them advice about staying safe.

- Supervise young people appropriately when they’re using unusual substances, such as powdered paint, ash or dirt. Be aware of any medical conditions which could be affected by what’s being used.
- Make sure you follow all relevant safety guidance or manufacturers guidelines, where available. Make sure you dispose of it appropriately too, in line with safety guidance.

Equipment
- Pens or pencils
- Stickers in nine different colours, or sticky labels
- Craft materials, including paper, string and chalk (optional)
- Nine different-sized balls or ball-shaped items (optional)
- A4 paper
- Sticky labels

- Three clean jars
- Soil
- ‘Alien’ matter (like sugar, powdered Alka-Seltzer and instant dried yeast)
- Hot water access
