  1. Explain to everyone that you'll be exploring the different jobs that firefighters do by becoming news reporters.
  2. Divide into small groups of three or four and give each group one of the news report scenarios. (It doesn’t matter if some groups have the same scenario.)
  3. Groups now have the task of creating a news report that tells the rest of the group about what the firefighters did. They can be as creative as they want as long as they keep to the main theme of the scenario.
  4. Participants can choose different roles within their group – they could be the news reporter, the cameraman, a bystander being interviewed or even the cat stuck up the tree!
  5. Give the groups about 15 minutes to plan and practise their news reports before they take it in turns to deliver their news reports to the rest of the section.
  6. The section then needs to guess from the news report what the firefighter did to help the situation.

Reflection

This activity helped you learn about the important role firefighters play. What sort of things do firefighters help with? What sort of situations is it best not to call the fire brigade for? Does being a firefighter sound like fun? Why? Is it an important job? Why is it important to understand what firefighters do? (Respect the work they do, avoid calling them out unnecessarily.)

Safety

All activities must be safely managed. You must complete a thorough risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Use the safety checklist to help you plan and risk assess your activity. Always get approval for the activity, and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.

All activities should be part of your risk assessment and meet Scout guidelines, including ratios, approval and consent.

The news reports can feature lots of different roles, including ones that don't need any acting or talking in front of people if there are young people who don't want to do this.

Try inviting a real firefighter along to your session to talk to the group and advise on your scenarios.

Make it accessible

All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.

News reports could be filmed and shown to other sections in your group as part of this badge.
