Ghana Scouts of the World Award expedition

Spend two weeks in Ghana undertaking a project with local community members

Are you a Scout Network member passionate about making the world a better place, earning one of Scouts' highest awards and building international friendships that will last a lifetime? If so, then the Scouts of the World Award expedition to Ghana might be the perfect trip for you!

Over a two week period in December 2026 - January 2027, you'll work in small groups to deliver a project working closely with the local community in rural Ghana, which will have a significant impact on local lives. You'll undertake and manage more than 80 hours of project management work, which will earn you your Scouts of the World Award.

You'll be working alongside local Scouts, community members, and our partner charity Village by Village, to ensure we all ‘leave the world a little better than we found it.’

The closing date for this opportunity is 9am Monday 22 September 2025, with shortlisting taking place shortly after this.

We'll contact all applicants, whether you've been shortlisted or not, prior to interviews on the evenings of Sunday 28 and Monday 29 September 2025.

  • The expedition will take place in December 2026 - January 2027 for two weeks.
  • In Ghana, you'll undertake a community project in a small group. This will be project managed by you and you'll work closely with local community members and our partner charity Village by Village.
  • To get ready for the expedition you'll participate in two training weekends and attend a SOWA Discovery.
  • The expedition will cost no more than £1,800. You'll also need to fundraise for materials needed to undertake your project. We expect this will be £300-£500, but your team will make the budget for this aspect.

The team will be led by Chloe Foster, who'll be joined by a further three Assistant Leaders.

We'll then be recruiting 20 participants who must all be Network members aged 18-24. To be eligible, participants' birthdays must fall between 31 January 2002 and 30 August 2008.

  • The provisional dates for this expedition are 27 December 2026 – 10 January 2027.
  • In the lead up to the expedition, you'll plan a project to deliver to achieve your Scouts of the World Award. This will be supported by our partner charity, Village by Village, and your project will work to meet one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Whilst in Ghana, you’ll be living amongst local people in the village of Abenta. Accommodation will be in dormitories in the bunk house owned by Village by Village.
  • You'll need to attend two preparation weekends ahead of the expedition.
  • These weekends will involve getting to know everyone in the team and gaining the skills needed to make the most of the expedition.
  • These weekends will build on the skills and knowledge gained from the Scouts of the World Award Discovery to ensure you’re prepared to thrive in Ghana.
  • The preparation weekends will be confirmed when participants are issued places.
  • The expedition should cost no more than £1,800
  • You'll need to pay an initial deposit of £320 after being accepted to join
  • This cost includes all travel, accommodation, food, activities, travel insurance, preparation weekends in the UK, and some expedition kit
  • Other costs that aren't included are travel to and from the airport (flying from London), vaccinations, malaria prevention and personal kit
  • You'll also be expected to fundraise for materials to support your project, we expect this to be between £300-£500
  • To join the expedition you must be between 18 and 24 years old in January 2027, a member of Scouts during the preparation and expedition, and commit to participate in all events. We're therefore accepting applications from members whose birthdays fall between 31 January 2002 and 30 August 2008.
  • You don't need any specific skills or experience to join, but a positive attitude, a love of challenges and a desire to work collaboratively with the local community to make the world a better place is essential.
  • This will be a demanding expedition that'll take you out of your comfort zone, but will leave you with incredible memories and a significant sense of achievement.
  • Are you the right leader for our team? Experience with international expeditions is not important, but attitude is key.
  • If you're up for the challenge, excited by the opportunity and able to help deliver an amazing expedition experience - please apply!
  • You'll need to cover the expedition cost, which is £1,550. We'll provide guidance of where to find financial support.
  • You'll need to commit to join all the preparation weekends and activities, as well as contribute to the planning and preparation.
  • Workload is expected to be up to four weekends throughout the preparation phase, and on average a few hours per week for planning and preparation activities.
  • Support and training will be provided throughout the process.
  • We would be particularly interested in hearing from people with first aid or medical skills, construction skills, and knowledge of coaching and mentoring skills. However, we envision appointing leaders without these skills too.
