Introduction

Wherever local collections are in their journey, the UKHQ Heritage Service wants to support volunteers to create assets which can support local Scouting. We want to help get our heritage out of the boxes and enable you to share the amazing stories held within.

There are five key areas to consider as you make your way through this process:

  • Governance
  • Volunteers
  • Purpose and Vision
  • Collections Management
  • Engagement

If you’re starting from the beginning with no existing structures in place, then it’s advisable to work through these areas in order as the decisions you make will inform your future practices.

Why you should keep your assets locally

The Heritage Service receives a high level of enquiries from people wishing to donate material to the collection. Often this duplicates material already held or we feel that the material would have more relevance if kept within its origin locality. We want to work with heritage volunteers to enable our Scouts heritage to be kept where it'll have most resonance.

To support this, we’ll provide templates which can be adapted to suit your collection and provide training and resources to enable you to manage your collection and use it in line with your statement of purpose.
