UK Activity Support Team Leader

Join our UK Scouts volunteer team

Equal opportunities

Scouts is an equal opportunity recruiter. We're committed to diversity and actively seeking applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, in particular, Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

About the role

Scouting is at its best when it’s active, adventurous and full of opportunity. The UK Activity Support Team Leader plays a key role in making that happen - helping ensure Scouts across the UK can access exciting, high-quality activities that build confidence, skills and a sense of adventure.

This national volunteer role brings together the incredible expertise of our UK Support Teams (formerly National Scout Active Support Units) and helps connect them with events, camps and programme delivery across the Movement. You’ll work closely with passionate volunteers and UKHQ colleagues to promote, coordinate and champion activity-based support - making sure specialist skills are used where they can have the greatest impact.

If you love activity-based Scouting, enjoy working with people, and want to help others deliver unforgettable experiences for young people, this role could be for you.

Key tasks

  • Lead the integration of UK Support Teams into Scouting events, camps and activities across the UK
  • Act as the primary link between UKHQ and UK Support Teams, building strong, collaborative relationships
  • Increase awareness of the wide range of UK Support Team specialisms, including Performing Arts, Caving, Scout Radio, Scout 4x4, Bushscout UK, Amateur Radio, Duke of Edinburgh (DofE), SOWA Mentors and Trainers, and Supporting Assessors
  • Support UK Support Teams to deliver high-quality, safe and inclusive activities for Scouts of all ages
  • Champion activity-based support across Scouting, encouraging the inclusion of specialist activities and training opportunities at local, regional and national levels
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers and staff to ensure activity support aligns with Scouting’s strategic priorities

Person specification

  • A strong understanding of activity-based Scouting and the role activities play in skills development
  • Experience of working with or supporting UK Support Teams, Scout Active Support, or similar volunteer teams
  • Experience organising or supporting large-scale events, camps or activities
  • An understanding of how specialist skills and support can enhance programme delivery
  • Confident leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate and support multiple volunteer teams
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build effective partnerships
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to motivate, encourage and support volunteers
  • Comfortable using digital tools to support your role (including email and common Microsoft applications)
  • Passionate about active and adventurous Scouting
  • Committed to Scouting’s values and purpose
  • Approachable, collaborative and supportive in your leadership style
  • Enthusiastic, proactive and keen to make things happen
  • Motivated to help others deliver brilliant experiences for young people

This role includes a range of tasks that need a realistic and ongoing time commitment, with flexibility around when those tasks are completed. If you already volunteer with Scouts, please take time to think about how this UK role would fit alongside any other roles you hold, and have a conversation with your current Team Leader before applying.

For some people, taking on a UK role may mean stepping back from, or handing over, another role so they can give each one the attention it deserves and have a positive and rewarding volunteering experience.
