Non-Executive Director at Scout Store

We're looking for two Non-Executive Directors at Scout Store

Equal opportunities

Scouts is an equal opportunity recruiter. We're committed to diversity and actively seeking applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, in particular, Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

About the role

We are inviting expressions of interest for two Non-Executive Director (NED) positions on the Scout Store Board.

As a NED, you will bring an independent, external perspective that helps shape the strategic direction of Scout Store. Working closely with the Managing Director, fellow Board members, and the senior leadership team, you will provide thoughtful challenge, clear guidance, and supportive oversight. Your insight and expertise will play a key role in ensuring the organisation continues to grow, innovate, and thrive in support of the wider Scouting movement.

Key tasks

  • Offer an external, independent perspective to inform Board discussions and decisions.
  • Contribute to the development, review, and refinement of the organisation’s strategy and objectives.
  • Review and approve the annual budget, statutory accounts, and key financial plans.
  • Provide constructive challenge to the Executive Directors and senior leadership team on strategic and operational decisions.
  • Monitor the performance of management against agreed objectives, values, and organisational priorities.
  • Support the identification, assessment, and management of risk, ensuring robust internal control frameworks are in place.
  • Advise on systems and processes that maintain the accuracy, integrity, and quality of management information.
  • Contribute to effective governance practices, including supporting succession planning for key roles.

Person specification

  • Experience in a strategic management or business development role, ideally within a consultancy environment and preferably involving environmental or sustainability-related services.
  • Previous experience as a Director (Executive or Non-Executive) within an organisation that has undergone sustained growth.
  • A strong track record in strategy development, governance, business development, and operational leadership.
  • Strong personal credibility and gravitas, earning respect both internally and externally.
  • Ability to engage constructively with senior management and provide effective challenge on complex or sensitive issues in a balanced, non-confrontational manner.
  • Proven ability to motivate, support, and positively influence senior leaders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey ideas clearly and confidently.
  • Strategic thinker with a strong commercial and business development orientation.
  • Sound understanding of organisational systems, controls, and risk management principles.
  • Good working knowledge of management accounts and the interpretation of management information.
  • A genuine commitment to the Purpose and values of The Scout Association.
  • The capacity and willingness to devote the necessary time and attention to the role.
  • Availability to attend at least four Board meetings per year - two held digitally and two held in person in Central London.
  • Willingness to review Board papers, engage in discussions, and contribute to specific matters between meetings as required.
  • Openness to a standard three-year term of appointment (subject to a six-month review), with the possibility of extension for a further three years by mutual agreement.
