About the role
In Wales, four Regional Lead Volunteers provide guidance and inspiration to our Movement, working to motivate and support their Area teams in achieving UK Scouting’s strategic objectives. These priorities are shaped in line with the Wales Leadership Team’s vision.
As a key member of the Wales Leadership Team, you will:
- Lead with purpose – Provide clear and effective leadership to all Scouting activities across, ensuring the successful delivery of our Skills for Life strategy.
- Inspire and empower volunteers – Offer strategic direction, motivation, and support to those who lead, manage, and deliver Scouting at every level within Wales.
- Drive strategic success – Champion, prioritise, and facilitate progress towards UK Scouting’s key objectives within all Scout Groups, Districts, and Areas in the Region.
- Represent Wales nationally – Work as part of the UK Scouts team, influencing the design and development of programmes, policies, and services to best serve the needs of our members in Wales.

Key tasks
- Ensure strong local leadership – Appoint, support, and guide Area Lead Volunteers so they can effectively lead their teams in delivering Scouting’s strategic objectives.
- Build a united regional team – Hold regular meetings with Area Lead Volunteers and ScoutsCymru staff to share ideas, collaborate, and provide mutual support.
- Set and deliver regional priorities – Work with Area Lead Volunteers to agree on key priorities for the region and develop clear, achievable plans to deliver Scouting’s vision and strategic objectives.
- Resolve issues promptly – Foster a positive volunteering culture by ensuring challenges, including complaints, are addressed in a timely and supportive way, helping Area Lead Volunteers feel confident in managing difficult situations.
- Actively participate in regional leadership – Attend three face-to-face meetings per year for Regional Lead Volunteers and two joint meetings per year with Regional and Area Lead Volunteers to contribute to the ongoing development of Scouting in Wales.
- Represent Scouting across the region – Attend events at Group and District level to champion the work of the Wales Leadership Team and national Scouting.
- Support and coach volunteers – Offer advice, ideas, and guidance to team members and other Scouts volunteers, helping them develop solutions to challenges and grow in their roles.
Person specification
- Proven experience in effectively managing and leading volunteers.
- Experience in strategic management, either in a professional or voluntary setting.
- Track record of managing adults across a wide geographical area and from diverse backgrounds.
- Recent leadership experience within Scouts is highly advantageous - particularly as a Group, District, or Area Lead Volunteer, or Leadership Team Member - though not essential if you can demonstrate an understanding of, and empathy for, those in such roles.
- Knowledge and understanding of how Scouting delivers its programme to young people, whether gained as a youth member, parent, or existing volunteer.
- Organise, lead, and motivate volunteers to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Speak and present confidently in public, communicating in a clear, engaging, and inspiring manner.
- Chair meetings effectively, both in person and via online platforms.
- Remain assertive and composed when managing challenging situations.
- Use digital tools competently, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email, and online platforms such as WhatsApp, Zoom, and Teams for virtual collaboration.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Listen actively and provide appropriate support, guidance, and counsel when needed.
- Inspirational, energetic, and able to motivate and create followership among fellow volunteers.
- Open to new ideas and driven to deliver positive change.
- Approachable and supportive, maintaining accessibility at reasonable times.
- Committed to the Values and Fundamentals of Scouts.
- Dedicated to ongoing personal growth and development.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and dependable.
- Willing and able to travel as required to attend meetings and events.

Wales Leadership Team
Scouting in Wales is an adventure – one filled with purpose, impact, and the chance to change lives. We’re looking for a Regional Lead Volunteer to join our Wales Leadership Team and help shape the future for over 7,000 young people and 2,000 volunteers.
