Update on our Digital Skills

Back in July we wrote a blog about Building on our Digital Skills. Since then we’ve worked out what counted as a digital skill and worked out a set of digital skills for Scouts. We ensured that those were the skills volunteers at the Scouts needed and then we began curating content for our Digital Skills Library.

We recently carried out volunteer testing with a range of Scout volunteers who gave us valuable feedback on the digital skills library. They told us the good, the bad and the ugly, helping us to understand what’s useful and allowing us to shape the content.

Our Digital Skills library is now live on the website and we continue to build on the content within it. You can expect to see a set of skills called ‘The Basics’ which should help you with almost everything you do as a scout volunteer digitally. On top of the transferable skills in The Basics, you’ll find support for Planning your Programme Digitally, Planning Events and Activities, Digital Finance, Digital Meetings and Training, Data and Documents, Working Together and Getting the word out.

Not everyone has the same level of Digital Skills and that’s been a key part of our thinking to date. It’s important that all our content is accessible to everyone. Making the content easy to find and understand is crucial. We’re doing this by using plain English and stripping back the techy terms as much as possible. And don’t worry, you won’t need too much pre-existing knowledge of digital skills, we start with the basics.

All the content we’ve put together will need reviewing by our volunteers, to ensure we produce many different variations of digital/hybrid scouting. Our Digital Skills Library can be accessed by anyone via our website. When you’re using the content, you’ll notice a feedback button pop up, we would appreciate if you could provide feedback on the library and we’ll work to ensure that the content we’re providing is exactly what you need.

We understand that not everyone may be able to access this blog post, this is where a more personalised approach is needed. Watch this space, more info coming soon.
