Hexamine Stove Advisory
01/26: Reinforcing Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety
We’ve issued a new Safety Alert and Learning Notice for all volunteers on reinforcing Carbon Monoxide (CO) safety.
Click here to review the noticeThe use of hexamine stoves is increasingly discouraged due to both safety concerns and regulatory restrictions. Hexamine fuel tablets produce toxic fumes, including formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, posing serious health risks. Additionally licensing legislation now restricts their use due to their flammability and potential misuse in illegal activities.
Safer alternatives such as Trangias and gas stoves, offer more controlled combustion, lower toxicity, and compliance with legal regulation.
For both personal safety and environmental responsibility, Scout users are strongly encouraged to transition to alternative fuel systems. To arrange disposal of hexamine, members should contact their local council who will be able to advise. Scout groups will not need to apply for a license to use up historic stocks of hexamine if appropriate disposal proves difficult to arrange.
