Activity for volunteers: Opportunities to improve our Culture

Reflect on on aspects of Our Volunteering Culture with the Let's Do the Challenging Ones activity

Activity outcomes

  • Understanding our team – think about behaviour from a team perspective.
  • Develop our team – approach improvement as a team.

Activity details

  • 30 minutes (or longer)
  • Indoors/outdoors/in person
  • Any volunteer team

You'll need

Before you begin

The activity

  • Each Team Member draws circles on Our Volunteering Culture next to bullet statements they feel are the team’s strongpoints.
  • Identify the bullet statements with the fewest circles. Reflect on what can be done to strengthen these areas, as a team.
  • The conversation should be kept on the team level and any steps for improvement (big or small) need to be owned as a team.

Activity variations

  • For more nuance, instead of circles, Team Members assign a value (1 = low, 2 = OK, 3 = high) to the bullet statements.
  • For even more detail, Team Members assign values (or circles) on two separate printouts of the Our Volunteering Culture. The first assesses the team as a whole, the second reflects their own performance.
  • This generates two assessments through different lenses. Compare how members see the team as a whole and themselves as part of it.

Reflection

This activity reflects on sharing, as a team, the task of constantly improving.

What within the bullet statements was most challenging?

What perspectives and experiences lie in the team that could help?

How can the team support one another to embrace Our Volunteering Culture?

Are there good practices and tips for the team to adopt?

What are strengths that the team can build on?

Is there an action or next step to be taken?

  • To encourage your team to focus on specific behaviours, base the activity on a smaller selection of bullet statements
  • See the examples under variations.
  • This activity requires a basic level of comfort within the team.
