Thistle Award
The Thistle Awards provide a focus on Scotland, it’s people, and culture — whilst being fun and challenging for young people.
Complete eight tasks with at least two from each section.
How to earn your badge:
Outdoor & Adventure
- Have your own Highland games. Try at least two different events.
For example: Caber toss (pool noodle), tug-of-war, welly toss or hill run.
- Play some traditional Scottish playground games.
For example: Hopscotch or What’s the Time Mr Wolf.
- Learn about your local area and visit a landmark in your town.
You could draw or make a model of your favourite place in your town.
- Take part in an activity that positively impacts your community.
You could sing at your local care home or make planters to brighten up the outdoor space where you have your meeting.
- Learn about the wildlife in your area and go on a local nature walk.
You could play nature bingo and see what you can spot.
- Go on a Haggis hunt! Here’s your chance to spot one of the legendary creatures in the wild!
Skills
- Learn about different Scottish myths and legends.
Draw or make your favourite one and tell a grown up an exciting fact about them.
- Learn a Scottish song.
For example: Loch Lomond, Three Craws or Coulter’s Candy
- Take part in an activity which uses Scots words.
You could read a story in Scots with a grown up, or learn a poem like Porridge. The Scottish Poetry Library has a “suitable for children” page online.
- Make your own tartan.
Pick your favourite colours, or use the colour of your nest. You can paint them or use strips of coloured paper.
- Find out about famous landmarks across Scotland.
Choose your favourite and draw it, then as a group make it into a map.
- Taste some Scottish food.
You could try shortbread or haggis!
World
- Make a poster of your nearest city, highlighting some of the most famous and exciting things about it.
Make sure people would want to visit after seeing your poster!
- Find out about your local area.
Someone could come visit your Drey and tell you all about their job and how it helps your community. What could you grow up to be to help your community?
- Imagine Squirrels from another country were coming to visit you.
What would you do with them to show off your area? What would you eat together? What would you play together?
- Learn about Scottish inventors and their inventions.
What invention is your favourite? Make a chart to find out your Dreys ultimate favourite invention.
- Plan out a Scottish meal for visitors.
You could try the food and think about how you would describe it to someone who’s never tried it before.
- Find out about another place in Scotland that isn’t where you live.
Learn some facts about them, like if they have a famous dish, what landmarks do they have, does anyone famous come from there?
Tips
If you haven’t finished your badges and challenges, you can carry on and complete them your first term in the section you are progressing to. Please note that any of these badge requirements can be done in conjunction with the UK badge programme. Requirements can be adapted to suit each young person’s abilities.
