Session summary

You will start this session with a quick game to find out what carbon monoxide is and where it comes from. Next make a carbon monoxide safety checklist and see how safe your meeting place is.

Safety message

  • Complete frequent headcounts, especially during transitions and activities, to ensure no one is missing and everyone remains safe.
  • Always complete a register at the start of the meeting to record who is present.
  • If you are meeting or going out from your usual meeting place, remember there must be a designated leader in charge, who is not counted in the adult to young person ratio.
  • Always remember to risk assess and plan for free time, even if it's just the first five minutes of the meeting.
  • Activities start when the first person arrives and end when the last person leaves, including leaders and their children.
  • Remember to review your risk assessment to ensure you have enough adults, which may be more than the minimum ratio.
  • Maintain and keep medical records up to date, check for any allergies or intolerances, this way you can plan to have the right resources.
  • Check the space is for hazards, keep the exits clear, and know the location of the nearest first aid kits.
