Notes

  • Many of the lochs in this area are used for hydro-electric power generation. Do not go within 200 metres of these structures. The rivers downstream of the dams are liable to sudden rises in water level and sudden increase in the speed of the current
  • Most of the rivers and lochs in this area are used for fishing, and full permission must be sought before using any of these waters for water activities. There has been much legal action concerning the use of canoes on the River Spey, and particular enquiries should be made
  • Permission for water activities will not be granted on Loch an Eilein; Loch Ruthven and Loch Tarff
  • Access and Egress and fine detail on rivers in question, may be obtained from SCA Guide to Rivers available from the Scottish Canoe Association (0131 3177314) which will also give local river adviser contacts who will help with any queries
  • Permission for use of the Caledonian Channel should be sort from the waterway secretary, British Waterways, Seaport Marina Muirtown Wharf, Inverness IV3 5LE

  • This guidance is for information and assistance only. It should be noted that the character of water can change according to the river levels or weather conditions (including the wind and tide) and the permit holder should review the conditions on the day, taking expert advice as appropriate.
  • Risk assessments should be carried out before using any stretch of water and that should consider water levels and water temperature at the time and the practicability of carrying out rescue/evacuation. Also consider the potential for other water users in the same stretch of water.
