Leaders and instructors

The size and nature of the ensemble will determine how many leaders there needs to be to both manage and lead it.

Ensemble Manager/Leader

The skills required by the Ensemble Manager/Leader might include any or all of the following. Please note that this list is not exhaustive:

  • Leadership and Management skills – essential

  • Scout Administration skills – essential

  • Resourcing skills e.g. finance / accommodation / support – essential

  • Ability to build a team and outsource as required based on the aims and objectives already agreed - essential

  • Ability to read music

  • Instrumental skills

  • Conducting skills

  • Tutoring skills

The Ensemble Manager/Leader does not necessarily need musical knowledge but needs the ability to bring a team together to achieve the musical aim

For one-off musical performances then a section leader may be able to cover all the above skills and roles with support from other leaders.

For regular ongoing ensembles such as marching bands or the NSGSO and NSGCB, then the leader is often a stand-alone position outside other Scout activities. This person needs a Scout role allowing them to lead regulated activity with all relevant vetting checks and learning complete and up to date.

Note that the Ensemble Manager/Leader needs to ensure that the standard of the ensemble and repertoire is appropriate for the event/performance as per the definitions above. They have responsibility for requesting assessment for high profile musical performances (see assessment section).

Additional Ensemble Roles

(Note that these roles are very different to roles in Section Leadership Teams)

  • Chairperson

  • Musical Director/Conductor

  • Tutors

  • Drum Major

  • Lead Musician / Lead Vocalist

  • Quarter Master

  • Treasurer

  • Fund Raiser
