Updates by Training area
These changes are due for implementation from 15 September 2020.
Getting Started
Do I need to re-do Essential Information and do the Safety and Safeguarding eLearning?
As long as completion (validation) of Essential Information (01) has been recorded on your Compass record before 15 September you do not need to complete the new Essential Information eLearning.
You will need to complete the Safety and Safeguarding training when your renewal is due. This will be every 3 years from 15 September. Your renewal date can be found on Compass.
If we change your renewal period to bring it forward, we will communicate with you directly by email. If you don’t have an email address in Compass we will communicate with your line manager.
If you haven’t validated Essential Information (01) before 15 September 2020 you will need to complete the new Essential Information, Safety and Safeguarding online training modules which include the assessments.
You have 5 months from your role start date to complete this training. If you haven’t completed this within the first 5 months this training is overdue and you should complete it urgently.
This will ensure you have the up to date knowledge in these subjects and that you have completed safety and safeguarding training (as these are no longer part of Essential Information). As they include online assessments, you will only need to present the certificates to your Training Adviser, Training Manager, line manager or the Training Compliance Volunteer Team at training.compliance@scouts.org.uk to have the modules validated.
As long as completion (validation) of Essential Information for Executive Committee members (01EX) has been recorded on your Compass record before 15 September you do not need to complete the new Essential Information eLearning.
If you have mandatory ongoing learning for Safety and/or Safeguarding last recorded on Compass within the past 3 years, as you completed Essential Information (01) for another role or did complete the separate Safety or Safeguarding training recorded on Compass then the renewal dates shown on your Compass training record are what you should go by.
If we change your renewal period to bring it forward, we will communicate with you directly by email. If you don’t have an email address in Compass we will communicate with your line manager.
If Essential Information for Executive Committee members (01EX) is the only training you have completed, you will need to complete the new Safety and Safeguarding training by 30 September 2023.
If you haven’t validated Essential Information for Executive Committee members (01EX) before 15 September 2020 you will need to complete the new Essential Information, Safety and Safeguarding and Trustee Introduction online training modules which include the assessments.
We are applying a data fix to Compass to remove Essential Information for Executive Committee members (01EX) from your PLP (as it hasn’t been validated so is not complete) and replace it with Essential Information, Safety, Safeguarding and Trustee Introduction.
I have a role that previously didn’t require any training and now requires some. Do I have to complete these if I already have a full appointment?
If you have not completed Essential Information (01 or 01EX), Safety or Safeguarding training, so don’t have any Safety or Safeguarding mandatory ongoing learning recorded, you must complete the new Safety and Safeguarding training by 30 September 2021. This will then roll you into the 3 year renewal period.
You do not need to complete Essential Information although we would recommend completing it to bring your knowledge up to date.
The time scale for completing Getting Started training is a maximum of 5 months from role start date on Compass. If this is not met, Commissioners can put mutually agreed restrictions in place.
Mandatory Ongoing Learning
If your training record does not already show completion of Safety and/or Safeguarding then the transition period to complete your Safety and Safeguarding training is 12 months, to 30 September 2021.
For those that have completed Essential Information for Executive committee members (01EX) you have until 2023 as have completed Safety and Safeguarding training as it was built into this module, it just hasn’t updated a mandatory ongoing learning record.
For those who haven’t completed Essential Information (01 or 01EX), Safety or Safeguarding training you currently have not had any training and so we require you to complete Safety and Safeguarding training within the 12 month transition period, so by 30 September 2021.
I have a role that previously required Essential Information, which included Safety and Safeguarding training but my role didn’t require an Appointment Review, so I haven’t kept Safety and Safeguarding training up to date.
If you have mandatory ongoing learning recorded on Compass then the renewal dates shown are what you should go by.
If we change your renewal period to bring it forward, we will communicate with you directly by email. If you don’t have an email address in Compass we will communicate with your line manager.
If the date shown is already in the past, you should complete the Safety and/or Safeguarding eLearning before 30 September 2021.
You are applying a data fix in Compass to change member’s mandatory ongoing learning renewal dates. What affect will that have on members?
If you are affected by this change, you will be communicated with directly, via email. If you don’t have an email address in Compass we will communicate with your line manager.
The transition period to complete Safety, Safeguarding and First aid training is 12 months, to 30 September 2021.
If your last completed date was in 2016 or earlier, nothing will have happened as your renewal date will be in 2021 (as it was previously 5 years).
If your last completed date was in 2017 and before September 2017 your renewal date will be changed to 30 September 2021.
If your last completed date was in 2018 and before September 2018 your renewal date will be changed to 30 September 2021.
If your last completed date was in 2019 your renewal year will be changed to 2022.
If your last completed date was in 2020 your renewal year will be changed to 2023.
You must complete this training urgently. You will receive an email advising you that you are not compliant and your Safety and/or Safeguarding training has expired. Commissioners can put mutually agreed restrictions in place to support you to complete this training as a priority.
The original transition period agreed for First Aid training was until the end of December 2020.
Based on wider changes to other mandatory ongoing training and the challenges currently being faced in renewing First Aid training at the current time, the transition period has been extended to align to the other training and so will also be to 30 September 2021.
Wood badge Training
Changes in Scouting (06) is in my PLP but I haven’t yet validated it, do I need to re-do Essential Information (01)?
No. It can be marked as validated on Compass in any PLP where it is outstanding.
We are removing the Executive Committees and Being a Trustee Independent Learning from the Using Resources core skill area.
It’s recommended that you complete the new Trustee Introduction training as this contains all the most up to date information on being a trustee.
We are removing the Safeguarding for Managers and Supporters Independent Learning from the Working with People core skill area.
You will now need to complete the Safeguarding eLearning as part of getting started training (within the first 5 months of the role start date) and renew this every 3 years.
If you are a District, County, Area or Regional Commissioner or deputy, the Safeguarding Commissioner Briefing already includes relevant content to support you in your role, however this is currently being updated. More information about this coming soon.
