It’s our community
To help other people’ has been in our DNA since day one. No surprise then that our recent Impact Study highlighted the very real and long-lasting differences that Scouting is recognised as making in our local communities.
Scouts sort it out
Earlier this year I joined a local Jamboree unit. They were stationed at recycling points to greet people as they arrived and help them sort the contents of their cars and plastic bags into the myriad of bins – it struck me that they were essentially bag-packing in reverse. The young people learnt a lot about the importance of recycling, got positive feedback from a very grateful public, and raised a reasonable amount of money in the process.
A modern twist
It is this combination of learning by doing, helping other people, promoting what we do and raising funds in the process that makes me so excited about Scout Community Week. Yes, a modern-day bob-a-job, as the media so loves to portray it, but in reality, it is so much more for the 21st century.
