‘I grew up in quite a rough part of Manchester and was fortunate in that we had a really good Scout Group nearby that often got us doing interesting things and sometimes out of the city. Now I’m older I just want to give kids a chance to experience the same things I did. I think there’s a real lack of things in some areas for young people to do and Scouting is flexible enough to be part of the answer. When you take one of the kids from the estates to go orienteering or sailing for the first time it’s amazing to see how into it they get. It’s a good feeling giving them that opportunity.’
