Unit Programme for Explorer Scouts
The Unit Programme aims to provide you with many of the tools, ideas
and techniques needed to run an exciting Balanced Programme for your
Unit.
The Unit Programme also includes the requirements for all the Explorer Scout badges and awards
The Unit Programme is one of three adult resources for the Explorer Scout Unit. As an adult working with an Explorer Unit, you will also need:
- The Unit Essentials
- The Unit Programme Plus
The Unit Programme has the following chapters:
1 Programme planning
What we offer to young people in the Explorer Scout section is a Balanced Programme: a range of activities, events and experiences built around six Programme Zones
2 Unit meetings in detail
Unit meetings generally last around two hours. This is long enough for the Explorers to have fun taking part in different activities with a relaxed social atmosphere.
3 Unit Programme: key principles
There are over 2,000 Explorer Scout meetings held throughout the UK most weeks. Meetings are held in a wide variety of environments and conditions.
4 Generating ideas
A resource like this can only include a limited number of ideas. Holding Unit forums regularly produces new and relevant programme ideas.
5 Badges and awards
Part of the Balanced Programme are the badges and awards, ranging from the activity badges to the Queen's Scout Award, which is the top Scouting award.
Appendix
Includes useful dates and a brief glossary.
Balanced Programme checker
As with the younger sections we have a Balanced Programme checker. Its quite simple to use, and is an easy way to ensure you are providing a balanced programme.
This sheet can be used in two ways. Primarily it can be used when planning your week's activities. If each planned activity has a programme checker with it then you can easily see what areas are being covered and make amendments to your programme.
Alternatively it can be used as a reviewing aid. At the end of every few weeks, every few months or at the end of a 'term', go through all the activities and tick the boxes as you go along, at the end you should be looking to have most of the boxes ticked. Use the sheet to help you plan your next programme, picking up on things perhaps missed out before.
