Young Leaders' Essentials
This resource explains how the Young Leaders' Scheme works, and how to set up and run a Young Leader Unit.
The scheme consists of 11 modules, of which Module A is compulsory by all. Each module focuses on different aspects of leadership, and four missions which allows the Young Leader to put into practice what they have been learning. The modules address everyday issues faced by Young Leaders and prepares the Young Leader for any difficult situations and challenging behaviour they may experience.
Young Leaders' Essentials is for all adults in Scouting who come into contact with Young Leaders. It will be particularly useful to Explorer Scout Leaders (Young Leaders) guiding young people through the Young Leaders' Scheme.
Leaders working in the first three sections will also find it a valuable aid to understand how the scheme works and making the most of Young Leaders at meetings.
This resource has the following chapters:
1 Introduction to the Young Leaders' Scheme
Young Leaders are aged between 14 and 18 and work in a Beaver Scout Colony, Cub Scout Pack or Scout Troop.
This chapter outlines the Young Leaders' scheme.
2 Operating a Young Leaders' Unit
Although the Young Leaders' Unit is one form of Explorer Scout Unit, there are many differences between the operation of this Unit and other Units in a District. The Young Leaders' Unit will probably meet less frequently than other Units, as the Young Leaders will want to spend most of their time with the Section they are working with and with the Explorer Scout Unit.
This chapter looks at how to run Young Leader Units.
3 The role of the Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader)
The Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader) is key to the success of the Young Leaders' Scheme. Appointed by the District Explorer Scout Commissioner, this Leader, more than most in the Explorer Scout Section, has to be:
- adaptable
- flexible
- training orientated
- able to relate well to the age range
- able to work well with Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Leaders
- patient
This chapter looks at the job description for the role.
4 Methods of delivering the training modules
There are many ways to deliver the training for the Young Leaders' Scheme. The modules have been designed to offer flexibility and every Young Leaders' Unit will need a different method of operation.
This chapter outlines approaches to running the training modules A-J.
5 Mission impossible
The missions in the Young Leaders' Scheme support and enhance the training modules. The different missions allow Young Leaders to put some of their new skills and knowledge into practice. By doing so, they will gain in confidence and become an integral part of the leadership team within their section and group.
