Recruitment: a fresh approach

Direct Mailings/Calls

Overview:

Direct mailings or calls can be used to attract the attention of former members. This may be a good idea if there is no one to manage or write a newsletter, as you can send a mailing or make a telephone call as and when you have relevant information. This method could be used to invite ex-members to social events or activity days, or it could be used to ask for specific help for a specific event.

Top Tips:

  • Create a database of former Leaders and supporters and make sure they are followed up after one year. They may be interested in coming back to Scouting either in the same role or in a completely different one. Provide them with the contact details of someone they can talk to about the opportunities available to them.
  • Use direct mailings or telephone calls to invite ex-members to social events. By keeping people involved in the social side of Scouting, they may feel more inclined to rejoin at some point. Social events will also give those involved an opportunity to talk to ex-members about what is going on and find out if they would be interested in getting involved in an event or activity.

Case Studies:

Be the first to tell us about your experience of using direct mailings or calls to recruit former members. Contact the Adult Support Team at adult.support@scout.org.uk or on 0845 300 1818.
