Building Fund - HQ pilot project (September 2008)
10/09/2008
The Scout Association recognises the importance of appropriate meeting facilities for the successful delivery of Scouting locally.
Following the success of the Future Growth Fund, launched during the Centenary, The Scout Association is piloting a grant scheme to offer Scout Groups a building grant for the refurbishment/building of Scout Headquarters which will support the further growth of Scouting locally.
The Development Grants Board has set aside a sum of £400,000 for this pilot project. Whilst no maximum or minimum grant level is set, it is envisaged that the board will support 10-12 successful applications during the pilot scheme period.
To find out if you are eligible for a grant, download the factsheet/application form (FS 185096) or alternatively email the Scout Information Centre or call them on 0845 300 1818.
All applications must be submitted by Wednesday 24 December 2008.

By David Crowden (13/09/2008 06:01) I could not open up the link to get a form
By Peter Flynn (13/09/2008 07:51) When trying to download the fact sheet 185096 it comes up with the reply 'file not found'. Please advise.
By Robert Ludlow (13/09/2008 08:39) Hyperlink has a spance on it's end and does not work until the space is removed, cut and paste link in and it will work
By Sue Flush (13/09/2008 13:00) Great idea but the link doesn't work again !
By Dave Sewell (13/09/2008 13:18) Great idea. We've been fundraising for the past 5 years for a new HQ, applying everywere possible for funding but with not success. Have raised a few thousand locally, but it seems that not many grant making bodies are interested unless the project is already in the 'ready to build stages' I wonder if this project is willing to provide the grants for the money to sit in the bank account whilst the remainder is raised. Just a point to note - we need approx £300k for our HQ which will encompass community facilities as well as group, district and explorer facilities.
By Dave Sewell (13/09/2008 13:20) PS the link to FS185096 doesn't work. And searching the site Factsheet FS185096 doesn't even exist!
By andrew sharples (13/09/2008 19:16) tried down loading the info but couldnt can you tell me why
By David King (13/09/2008 21:26) it would help if the link to the form worked!
By Alan Fish (14/09/2008 13:02) Can't gain access to download 185096 Yours Alan.
By richard.rowson (14/09/2008 21:06) Very laudable but the last time we had an estimate to rebuild our scout hut it came to over £350,000. We tried to cut out rooms etc. to get it smaller but it was still a lot of money and the Lottery would not help.
By FIONA RENTON GSL 14th Midlothian Scout Group (15/09/2008 09:22) I am unable to download the factsheet/application form (FS 185096). This grant is just what we are looking for and I am sure many Scout Groups think the same.We are finding it very difficult to get monetary help for a much needed refurbishment of an aged Scout Hut.
By John-Paul Yates (15/09/2008 09:52) The link doesn't work!!
By Matt Oakes - Web Team (15/09/2008 14:04) Apologies, the link has been fixed.
By F K Todd (15/09/2008 16:00) About time the Scout association did something about those groups with the need to refurbish their HQ but £400000 is insufficinet as it may only mean about £35- 40000 each if successful. We have had a survey of our HQ and we need £125000 - £150000 to update the building to modern building standards.
By John B. (15/09/2008 19:06) Link working OK now
By Charles Bone (16/09/2008 12:23) Good to see HQ financially helping groups. Passing to our Chairman and GSL for discussion at next Exec meeting. The link worked for me.
By Bob Jones Scout Leader 2nd Bulford(St Leonards) Scout troop (16/09/2008 12:30) Could of done with this years ago but we will still apply as we have been raising money for a new Hq Building
By Peter Bishop (16/09/2008 16:24) As I Work with a charity I know the problems of raising money. Scout groups have no end of trouble acessing funds because of the critea laid down by the trusts. When raising money for biulding up keep etc. it is even worse you can not get enough money and the longer it takes the more expensive it gets. Our group have tried unsucsefully three times to get lottery funding. it is a up hill struggle to get money to rebiuld etc. we are still trying best of luck to those still at it.
By Anna W (16/09/2008 19:51) Stand back and look - how many buildings are used only a few hours a week, or stand next to School halls not used out of hours. Sometimes we put too much time, energy and money into bricks when some sharing and creative thinking would free off resources for much more outdoor fun.
By Cath Batley (19/09/2008 20:21) Would love to share with a School but Sheffield charges make this impossible. After school initiatives are open to all and invite some external funding which can meet this cost Scouting doesn't. Governers have the discretion to charge a smaller amount than the £25 an hour directed by the LA but there is no will for schools to subsidise Scouts
By Steve Mather (20/09/2008 18:55) Why go for a brick built building costing a fortune when you could purchase a modular building for around £180,000. 1st Towcester Scout HQ should be written up as a case study and a model for others to follow. Here are a few photos to water your appitite. http://www.towcesterscouthallpreschool.co.uk/gallery.php scroll through the photos for pic of the inside etc. The building was purchased from Compton Buildings, maybe the Scout Association could work with Compton on a standard design for a Scout HQ building which Compton could sell at a set price.
