Scouts mark Founder's Day

09/02/2012

Founder's Day is a time to reflect on scouting success and celebrate the work of dedicated volunteers across the UK and worldwide.

To recognise and remember the inspiring lives of our founders, there will be a service of special prayers and renewal of the scout and guide promises at Westminster Abbey on 20 February 2012. Wayne Bulpitt (UK chief commissioner) and Gill Slocombe (UK chief guide) will lay flowers at the service, followed by a public service of evensong, attended by several young people from both organisations.

What is Founder's Day?

Founder's Day for scouts commemorates the joint birthday of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave Baden-Powell (world chief guide) on 22 February. National Scout Associations across the world celebrate this day as a timely reminder of their achievements in individual development and community spirit. It is also a chance to reflect on the life and wisdom of our founder who inspires all to: '...try to leave this world a little better than you found it...'

Many of the adult scouters in Barnet have attended the Founders Day Service over many years. Is there no longer going to be a Saturday Service especially for the Scout & Guide movements? On these Saturday's London was full of young people in uniform a fantastic advert for what we work for.

We have attended Founder'Day for many years with Brownies, Cubs or adults leaving on the 6am train from Newcastle. Evensong isn't possible for a one day trip so I think this is discrimination against those not in London or nearby. This was always the highlight of our Scouting year.
