Jamboree heroes prepare to depart
07/08/2011
The UK volunteers at the World Scout Jamboree have been at their inspirational best.
Some 7,000 members of the International Service Team (IST) have worked tirelessly, through the Jamboree to make the event happen.
They performed a range of jobs, working with complete strangers and, in some cases, right through the night.
Volunteer army
Around one in ten of the IST came from the UK and every single one has done UK Scouting proud.
After working in the shop all day Dan Richardson from West Lancashire volunteered to do an extra shift to help the site services team clean the toilets. ‘We are all part of one team trying to make everything run as well as it possibly can. Sometimes you need to go the extra mile,’ he said.
Great people
As part of the site services team, Roland, a student from Cheshire, was responsible for emptying thousands of bins. ‘It’s not the most glamorous job. I think if someone had told me I would spend ten days emptying bins I wouldn’t have signed up, but that would have been a mistake.
‘Being at a Jamboree isn’t about what you are doing, it’s about who you are with and I have met some great people to stay in touch with.’
Develop new skills
Ben from Kent said ‘It’s really refreshing to discover that I am part of something so massive and when I get back to the UK I want to spread that message.’
Some took on jobs similar to those they have in the ‘real world’ while for others it was a chance for them to try something new and develop new skills.
Worthwhile effort
Leaders have put a huge amount of time and effort into making sure that everything runs smoothly.
But there are clear bonuses too. These volunteers also meet new people, make friends, learn more about other cultures and feel part of this incredible event.

By Gill Gane on 07/08/2011 21:50 Just a very big thank you to all of you - I am really glad that you enjoyed it, you must have worked so hard! I can't wait for the East Lancs team to get back and tell us their stories. But just enjoy knowing that you have given 39000 or so young people the time of their lives. Congratulations!!

By John May on 08/08/2011 15:05 I just wanted to write to say "thank you". From the stage at the beginning of the Jamboree, I told you all that you'd end up exhausted, physically, emotionally and spiritually, but happy. Over the last fortnight we've all worked to deliver an experience for over 38,000 young people that will change their lives for the better. Whatever job you did, you went the extra mile, kept smiling and created a true Jamboree spirit. You were, are, and continue to be, the true stars of the event. Many, many thanks.

By Robert on 10/08/2011 17:39 My daughter (a guide member) spent the Jamboree cleaning toilets but still had a wonderful time. I am so proud of her for what she achieved and that she carried out her duty without complaint. She can't wait for the next jamboree in Japan

By James Ger on 29/08/2011 11:41 Not all IST were heros in the Jamboree. Some preferred to sun themselves on the beach rather than do their duty. One I overheard complained about the state of the toilets which they were supposed to be cleaning but had not done so for three days!!
Shame on them but then they are only a small element among many heros.
