Time to reflect

31/07/2011

After four days at the Jamboree for many it was time to reflect upon their journey and upon their experiences.

The Global Development Village (GDV) is one of the zones at the Jamboree where young people come together to find out about the challenges facing people in different parts of the world. Many have firsthand experience of natural disasters, war, poverty and drought.

Learning activities

Andy, an Explorer Scout from Surrey had just returned from a virtual fishing game. ‘The idea was to get you to think about fair trade, where food actually comes from and sustainability, I think sometimes we can all be a little ungrateful for what we have, and wasteful without realising that people around the world, including Scouts, often don’t have enough to eat.’

In the GDV Scouts can learn about poverty, famine, war, child labour, the environment and much more. Scouts from Haiti told of how they searched through rubble and used basic skills to save the lives of hundreds of people following a series of disasters last year.

Global community

Feeling part of an immense global community is a major part of what the Jamboree is about and as young people feel empowered to make a difference in the world. As one UK Scout remarked to a Canadian Scout ‘I never knew that I could make a difference, I never knew that I could help change things…until today.’

The inter-faith ceremony was an appropriate way to end the day, with around 10,000 Scouts braving the torrential rain to gather in the main arena to celebrate the diversity present at the event.

Depp, an Explorer Scout from London, had a key role in the service talking about his Sikhism. ‘It was amazing to have so many people together celebrating their faiths and beliefs, it was a great way to find out about other faiths and focus on the similarities rather than the differences.’
