Keep the programme in your pocket

18/04/2011

You can now enjoy mobile Scouting with the new badge app.

My Badges is The Scout Association’s official badge app and is now available for iPhone and iPod Touch users. Ideal for quick reference at meetings or camp, it contains the requirements for every badge and award in the UK 6-25 programme.

Fantastic features

The Scout Association’s first smart phone app is perfect for volunteers, parents and young people alike. It contains a host of features to make Scouting easier wherever you happen to be, including:

  • Requirements for every badge and award in the UK 6-25 programme (any changes to badges and award requirements will automatically be sent to your iPhone or iPod Touch)
  • Ability to track personal progress
  • Promise and Law for all ages (including all permissible variations)
  • Interactive badge position diagrams
  • Ability to share email and SMS links to scouts.org.uk (iPod Touch - email only)

Great graphics

With images of every badge, participating in the programme is now easier and more fun for all Scouts. Mums and dads will also be pleased with the badge positioning facility – now there’s no need to guess.

‘I’ve already downloaded the My Badges App,’ says Tom Hylands, an Explorer Scout Leader. ‘As a volunteer I’m going to find it really useful to use when I’m out and about as it gives me access to key information whenever and wherever I need it.’

Watch a video of the app in action.

Visit iTunes to download the app. Priced £1.19 (not currently available for android phones).

An Android version would be great!

By Stephen Williams
on 18/04/2011 11:28

So as an unpaid volunteer I am expected to pay £1.19 for information aimed at helping my cubs get more badges? Hmm, may just stick to my current method of using the website (which is free). Surely this could be an app paid for by the hundreds of thousands of pounds scouting volunteers bring in every year through annual subscriptions.

Any plans for an Android version of this app? If so - how far away is it? Cheers!

What's the plan for Android (release date, comparison etc.)? Thanks for mentioning it though, too many people say "AMAZING NEW APP" and then don't even mention Android.

By Chris Elmer
on 18/04/2011 12:30

I think it's a massive shame that you are charging for this.

Maybe the development cost was high but this is the sort of app that would be best published for free download.

By Andy
on 18/04/2011 12:36

Great idea.

Does "not currently available for android phones" mean it is going to be available? Android devices already outnumber iPad/iPhone so it is needed - I need an Android version!

How about Smartphone (e.g. Android) apps for those who do not subscribe the marketing ploys of Mr Jobs? When will they be coming out?

By Helen
on 18/04/2011 14:31

Here was I getting excited thinking we might be getting a better functioning website search or database. This is not so useful for us meer mortals who don't have an ipod or iphone, or even a smartphone.. and you have to pay for it too..

By Chris
on 18/04/2011 14:43

Wouldn't an easy to use mobile site be of more use to more people? And almost certainly cheaper!

By Nick Wood
on 18/04/2011 14:44

Great idea. Don't mind the cost as a book would be more expensive. £1.19 isn't excessive.
However, why for iPhone only? Android and Blackberry are more popular.

By Chris James, Creative and Brand Adviser, The Scout Association
on 18/04/2011 14:46

Thanks for all the comments so far and of course affordability is very important. We started out with an app with very basic functionality. However as it developed we added more graphics, interactivity and accessibility features, which meant it spent longer in development.

We think ultimately it makes for a better, lasting product. Remember the updates will also be sent free of charge to your phone.

This is very much a first for the Association and we will gauge interest before looking at developing on other platforms. Thanks again for all the feedback.

By Gary Scholes

Android version please. Why is it that everybody makes apps for iPhones, but there are so many people out there with Android phones than there are with iphones?

By Scouter
on 18/04/2011 15:03

Those of you complaining about the price, why don't you claim it back from your unit as the cost of a resource?

By Mark Arnold
on 18/04/2011 15:52

You say "we will gauge interest before looking at developing on other platforms".

That will show a false statistic then as (has been already pointed out) Blackberry and Android etc are more popular.

on 18/04/2011 16:34

Hi guys. Brilliant app and a long time coming. A little put out by having to pay for it but no I have it as you say the updates are free from now on. Cant wait to see the additions to it. Go for it!! Scouts going mobile!!!

When is the Blackberry App coming? I thought Scouting was inclusive! How can we have an app for just one platform?

This would be a good App for Blackberry's.

By Jon Evans
on 18/04/2011 19:12

If this is aimed to be a marketing initiative, it is surely a home goal? I was taught not to use football or music for marketing, as people are tribal. I would imagine smartphones could be added to this advice. Looks great though!

on 19/04/2011 13:36

Great idea, nice to see the Association keeping up with the times! I'm happy to pay a mere £1.19, hardly breaks the bank, and after all if you are that bothered, just charge it back to your group. This is much cheaper than a paper copy, you will always have it with you, and it updates for free. Well done to all involved.

By Chris George
on 19/04/2011 16:05

This app is very good. It's better than a mobile-enabled website because you can view the info offline. Where our Scout hut is, there is no 3g coverage, and normal mobile coverage is poor. So this will be very useful. I agree android version would be good, but I have an iphone so I'm happy!
(oh and £1.19 is hardly going to break the bank is it!)

By Trev
on 19/04/2011 16:38

What an overdue addition to our resources! At less than the cost of a litre of petrol, it's an absolute bargain. Well done to all those involved in its development.

By Russ

When can we have an Android version - Android Phones are more widespread than iPhones so should have been developed first.

By Mark Turner, DC Harrogate And Nidderdale
on 20/04/2011 08:46

Great App, Good concept and well done for moving Scouting forward.
I'm sure when B-P wrote Scouting for boys many Scouters of the time complained about 'having to pay' for the manual of Scouting! As we have developed as a movement all Scouters fall into asking for a 'Scouting discount' so asking the same for something that costs so little is not very surprising.
Yes please roll out across other platforms (Win phone 7 for me).
I guess we are working to a new slogan for Scouting, something along the lines of "Scouts Do It In The Cloud"
Well done to all involved.

By Richard

on 20/04/2011 18:57

Brilliant App, full of useful information and worth every penny of £1.19 (stop moaning you lot, how many of you pay for rubbish!!) this is almost like the entire 6-25 programme all in one place for less than 10% of the books you could pay for. as they say in cubs BRAVO scout association.

By Fiona ACSL 64th Birkenhead
on 20/04/2011 20:28

I HAD to have this app as soon as I saw it on Twitter and I am in no way dissapointed, it is brilliant!! Already used it for our planning meeting yesterday and it was so much easier than using the book and I was able to read through it before the meeting easily and note down my ideas from it, all in all its given us a interesting programme for next term that may not have been quite as varied had I not gone through the app! Well done!! Stop moaning people, £1.19 is VERY good value, and free updates.... FAR cheaper in the long run than buying even 1 book which goes out of date!!!
Recommend it to all!!!

By Chris
on 20/04/2011 20:38

Great app. Please can the next update include info regards the Adult Training Scheme, modules etc

By Jim Andrews
on 21/04/2011 13:16

As others have asked, Android version please, there are more non-Apple products in use than iPhones, so why not support the majority?

And to those moaning about the price, yes, it would be good to have it free, but is £1.19 such a hardship? I bet you spend way more than that printing bits out for use in your section meeting!

By Adam
on 21/04/2011 13:26

Another vote for an Android version from me.

There are actually more Android handsets out there and yet companies and organisations are still fixed on developing iPhads.

By Martin
on 21/04/2011 13:43

Paying for the app doesn't bother me in the slightest, but not having it available for Android is a major mistake. Perhaps you've only listened to iPhone users who feel obliged to evangelise about their phones, but there is a truly massive Android market that you just missed by a mile.

Sad to see that the scout association has gone for a chargeable app on apple products, I feel it goes against the open to all ideals of scouting.

By Greg

Another vote for android most of my scouts dont have iPhone but android based phones and blackberies.

By Jon Hole
on 22/04/2011 03:57

I'm really impressed by the quality of the app - it feels 'polished'.

The app has a lot of potential for future development. As a leader, the 'award now' button isn't a feature I will use, however if I could add all my scouts to the app, and then keep track of which badges each scout has, that would be very useful! It would also be useful to 'tick off' each individual requirement of a badge, so you could keep track of what has been done, and what is still to complete, when working towards a badge.

The more I think about it, the more this could actually do:

Imagine include a database for the scouts details (as long as the data is encrypted, maybe with a passcode to get into the app) and then include a weekly register, patrol points etc etc. This could possibly be then synced back to the scout website, so all the leaders of a unit could keep their apps in sync with each other.

Lastly, it would be great to have an offline, searchable version of POR available for when we have a query in the middle of a scout campsite with no signal!

By Lynden
on 22/04/2011 09:40

Cannot believe that so many are complaining about the price of this App! £1.19 is very reasonable and I bet many will have spent a lot more on other far less useful apps. I'm also looking forward to a release for my Android, the sooner the better.

By jason

By Trevor Sutton
on 22/04/2011 11:47

Why are you charging volunteers for this app? Let me know when it's free and then I will use it infill then I will use the website.

How about getting POR as an app?

By Alex Harper

Great idea but I am shocked that it is a chargeable app!! I won't tale it up out of principle.

By Maddie Jenkins

Let's have one perk for all the time and work
We put in!

By Andy Gaul

Hopefully you will make this available to all smartphones eventally. Great idea.

By Jo Davison
on 23/04/2011 18:47

I'm with Stephen Williams on this one. Apps like this cost very little in development as it is not animation or flash heavy, so why charge? I think you've just lost a large majority of users, therefore losing the practicality of the app as a whole.

By Paul
on 23/04/2011 19:25

Android version please, why does everyone think everyone has an iPhone

By Stuart - scout leader
on 24/04/2011 10:50

No android version yet? When is this likely to happen? I also cannot believe you are charging for this. As volunteers we already give up our time and now we are going to be charged for info to make it easier. I'll keep using the website. Another stroke of genius from the scout association!

By Mark Gately
on 24/04/2011 15:25

Why the moaning about £1.19 surely an expense any group could afford. If they can not let me know as you need some serious help with budgets. Has anyone else got a Nokia phone which requires it's own app? Let's lobby The Scout Association for universal available apps not just those thst can afford an i-phone

By hawkeye
on 24/04/2011 15:40

As a leader, it might be of some use if a parent asks me specific details about a certain badge. As such I would want the details readily at hand. What i do not need is a site that is full of irrelavant graphics that eats into my data allowence or increases (as in the Beaver section for example). At home or work if i needed details I can go to the Scouting sites for information on a meeting night I will continue to use the resource information that I have always had i.e. the printed manuel. If some people say that its too difficult maybe some one may be able to create a app that tells people how to user indexes etc. As such this app appears to have only one function that is to make money for the people who created it unless they are really generous and give everything to the scout along with association along with the fees apple skim off aswell

Android is expected to snag 38.5% (22.7% in 2010) of the smartphone market by the end of 2011, with Apple iOS in second place with 19.5%. So an Android version of this app would be very nice.

By Phil Hassall
on 26/04/2011 23:36

An excellent app, thanks. The cost is minimal and a lot cheaper than a book and hopefully always up to date to save buying newer versions of books.

An app for POR & factsheets would be useful too please.

By Gareth Sandilands

Brilliant App downloaded it as soon as i saw it was available ! I believe strongly that the key for future development in syncing with our current web management system. I would also like POR as a downloadable part of the app. Great news and positive step in the right direction.

PS Out of interest how many have downloaded this so far ?

Great app just one serious omission for Explorer. Please could you get a version the IEV list added to the Platinum, Diamond Chief Scout and Queen' Scout Award requirements? Actually the list is hard to find on the new website too as the navigation is confused and ill thought out.

The paid aspect of the app will mean it will not be used by a huge about of the people it's aimed at such as most scouts and explorers. Also if it was free parents will be able to see the requirements and will be able to help and even suggest to the kid a badge they might want to do. Plus I think trying to get that amount out of my group would impossible.
