Charity begins at Reunion

20/08/2010

The Scout Association proudly works in partnership with many charities which operate on the frontline of disaster and poverty. This year’s Reunion event will give attendees the chance to find out more about this work and the activities they can offer.

The programme for Reunion 2010 is jam packed with partner organisations, retailers and programme support. The training ground marquees on the Saturday will turn into Programme Zones with interesting ideas and links for you to adopt.

The Global Zone will be supported by many external partners who’ll be informing participants about the links they have with The Scout Association and giving ideas for running activities in each of the sections. Among them will be:

Bookbridge

Bookbridge aims to improve children’s access to education in developing countries, to provide a way out of the poverty they are born into. This is done by establishing education centres, training teachers and supplying books. Working alongside Scouts in Germany, Bookbridge sends used children’s books to schools which are teaching English to their students but can’t afford the resources.

Scouts collect used children’s and young people’s books, written in English, and donate them to Bookbridge, who in turn pass them to projects in developing Countries. The Scout Association is starting a similar partnership with Bookbridge in the UK, and lots of programme ideas will soon appear on POL.

Save the Children

This international charity works towards ensuring children in the UK and across the world get proper healthcare, food, education and protection. It saves lives in emergencies, campaigns for children's rights and improves futures through long-term development work.

At Reunion 2010 the organisation will provide activity ideas from its current resources and, on Sunday, will be running a workshop to ask you how you think the partnership should be taken forward. If there are any particular areas of their work you’re interested in, or areas of the Global Programme you’d like help with, then this is perfect for you.

SOS Children's Villages

Recently featured in Scouting magazine, the charity cares for children who are have been orphaned and abandoned by giving them a new home and a loving family. The children are integrated into a caring family with a new ‘SOS’ Mother, brothers and sisters, who will become their new family for life. They currently have lots of activity ideas on POL, and will be saying a bit more about their work and giving more activity ideas at Reunion.

Shelterbox

Continuing a long-standing partnership with Scouting, ShelterBox will be running an activity for adults to participate in – we would say more but we don’t want to ruin the surprise! You’ll have to come along to find out.

With only two weeks to go until Reunion 2010 now is the perfect time time to book your place.
