Big Adventure hits fever pitch

Thousands of parents are getting their first taste of Scouting this summer, as part of a Big Adventure event.
By being actively involved in an event, parents see Scouting in action, and are encouraged to volunteer for Scouting in the future.
The 5th Carmarthen Scout Group held their Big Adventure camp in Pembrokeshire. Siriol Butterworth is one of their leaders:
‘We recruited a lot of parents into helping organise the weekend camp, and formed sub committees to organise the kit transport, catering, campsite service and activities. This worked really well and certainly reduced the load on the leaders.’
Weekend fun
‘Activities were organised so that families could join in at whatever level suited them. On Saturday afternoon, we had three hikes appropriate levels for a Beaver, Cub or Scout hike away, but as children were all accompanied by parents they could join whichever walk they fancied.
‘On Sunday afternoon we got families involved with various beach competitions – best sandcastle, best sand mosaic and most interesting rock pool find.
‘Monday morning brought the end of camp, but not before we had the traditional water fight. It was a very tired, but happy bunch of people who left after lunch on Monday, with several first time campers converted to helping out at our weekly meeting.’
About The Big Adventure
From Saturday 1 May until Tuesday 31 August any camp or event can be part of The Big Adventure, simply by inviting parents and other adults to get involved.
