Scouting campaign wins recognition from PR industry

17/06/2010

The Scout Association’s successful Stop the Rain Tax campaign won recognition from the Public Relations industry this week.

The Association won the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ (CIPR) Excellence Award for a Public Affairs campaign which saw both adults and young people mobilised to ensure unfair water charges were not imposed on Scout Groups in England and Wales.

The campaign was praised by judges for being: ‘An integrated national and regional public affairs campaign that engaged with its youth members through social media.’

CIPR also noted that: ‘Stop the Rain Tax successfully promoted awareness of the serious problems that water charging was having on community and voluntary groups such as The Scout Association.’

Nancy Ibrahim, a Young Campaigner who worked on the campaign said: ‘It was an amazing experience for me to address loads of MPs about the unfair tax that OFWAT wanted to introduce that would have penalised our Scout Groups. I am so pleased that the work carried out by young people and adults across the UK to stop this unfair tax was recognised last night by CIPR.’

Wayne Bulpitt, UK Chief Commissioner, said: ‘This award recognises the hard work put into the campaign by so many of our members, both young people and adults, and is very much deserved by them all. Whether writing letters to Members of Parliament, lobbying them in person in their constituencies or in Westminster, or attending the largest All Party Group meeting in recent history, everyone played their part in the success of the campaign.

'This is the first time that the Association has taken action in this way. The campaign demonstrates what we can achieve when we work together as a Movement and I’m delighted that the work we did together has received the public recognition it deserves.’
