Bear Grylls sends message of support to Cumbria Scouts

16/06/2010

Chief Scout Bear Grylls has sent a personal message of support to Cumbria’s Scouts.

Bear’s message was to all of the ‘Scout family in Cumbria’ and acknowledged the difficult times being faced by those in the County, in the wake of the shootings that happened earlier this month.

He said, ‘I know that each of you has been affected in such a painful way by the recent catastrophes, but please know that you are part of our Scout family and greatly loved and valued by many. We are here for you if you need any help in whatever capacity. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.’

On Wednesday 2 June, Gunman Derrick Bird killed twelve people and injured many others when he opened fire across West Cumbria.

Amongst those to hear the message were members of the 2nd Seascale Scout Group, who met for their AGM last week.

Graham Worsnop, Group Scout Leader, said: ‘The shootings came a week after the Keswick Coach crash, which affected a number of our Scouts – about four go to the school, and some travel on that coach. Now we get this. It is very hard to explain how people feel – numb, shocked, and disbelieving – these things don’t happen here. In a village of about 1,800, to have three killed and more shot beggars belief. We all know someone who has been involved. However, we will cope. We will get through it.’

Graham said that the Scouts had been ‘buoyed’ by the message from Bear.

It was good to know that Scouting was supporting our members in the County, for info our members have been directly affected by the shootings. Young members have witnessed shootings, a Cub Scouts father was wounded, an assistant leader's fiance was shot and killed. One of our Scout members on the Bus behind the one involved in the accident at Keswick ended up at the hospital making 400 cups of tea for those visiting the injured. And the PC that died during the floods had 4 children all members of Scouts.

All in all a large County, but close community
