Scouts up for top women's award

18/05/2010

Two teenage Scouts have been chosen as finalists for a national award which recognises extraordinary women.

Explorer Scout Clair-Victoria Butfield and Scout Network Member Megan Hudson have been nominated in the young woman category of the Extraordinary Women of The Year Awards.

Clair-Victoria, 16, from Essex, volunteers as a Young Leader organising activities for Beaver Scouts. Her volunteer role also sees her looking after children with special needs.

Upon hearing news of her nomination, Clair-Victoria told the Colchester Daily Gazette, ‘I’m sort of flattered, but I’m also quite embarrassed as well. I don’t feel I actually do anything.’

Clair-Victoria was nominated by her mother who said, ‘She works very hard with the children and is very committed. She gives a lot of time to it.’

Megan, 18, from Derbyshire, volunteers as a Beaver Scout Leader for the 1st Chatsworth Scouts.

Vicki Espin, organiser of the awards said, ‘We have again been amazed at the outstanding level of nominations this year. These women are all extraordinary in their own rights and have all achieved in so many different ways. It’s going to be a tough decision for the judges.’

The winners in the five categories will be announced at a special ceremony tonight in Nottingham, along with an overall winner.
