This weekend is Sport Relief, with an evening of entertainment on television, as the nation’s sport stars and celebrities gather to raise millions of pounds to transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people, both at home and in the world’s poorest countries.
From bouncing Beaver Scouts to mile ready map-reading Explorers, Scouts across the UK are gearing up to have fun and raise money. Here’s a round-up of some of the athletic events planned.
Dressing in red
In Worcestershire, the 6th Worcester Beaver Colony are looking forward to an action-packed evening of sports and games. Beaver Leader Suzanne Price is crossing her fingers for good weather. ‘If it’s fine we’ll be going onto the playing field that backs on to our HQ. The Beavers will be competing against each other in a range of sports, like egg and spoon races, balancing raises and circuits of the field. Everybody’s been asked to wear red and bring a pound to donate to Sport Relief.’
Because the young people have not had much to do with Sport Relief at school in the local area, they’re pleased to get the chance to have sporty fun at Beavers. ‘When we told them last week, they were over the moon to be supporting Sport Relief, having seen about it on the TV.’
Scout style mile
In Somerset, the Mendip Explorer Scout Unit kept Scouting Skills at the heart of their Sport Relief challenge, with a programme of navigation, following clues and grid references to reach their destination. The task involved collecting ten listed items, travelling over five miles in the process, and meeting up in a coffee shop in Wells by a set time.
A big part of the Sport Relief weekend is the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile, and across the country Scouts of all ages have been preparing to make sure they are ‘mile ready’. In Cambridgeshire, the 1st Earith, Bluntisham and Colne Scouts are doing a three mile challenge towards their Fitness Challenge. In West Mercia, Scouts from the 1st Sandwell will be completing three miles in the Sandwell Valley. In Moray, the 5th Elgin Cub Scouts will be embracing the spirit of Sport Relief by participating in their own 'Silly Mile'. Last but not least, former Chief Scout Peter Duncan will be joining the hordes as he lines up for the London Mile. You can sponsor Peter at his fundraising page.
Bouncing Beavers
In Guernsey, the 9th Guernsey Beaver Scouts will have to wait until Wednesday to take on their Sport Relief challenge, but as Beaver Scout Leader Julie Bulpitt explained, they can’t wait. ‘We’re hiring a bouncy castle and slide, and the Beavers are paying £5 each to bounce for Sport Relief. I don’t think they’ll be able to do that for a whole hour, so we’re also using the True and False Quiz from Programmes Online and adapting the 100 Challenge of fitness activities that we used during Scouting’s centenary year.’
Finley, 6, summed up the excitement by saying ‘We’re bouncing and sliding for Sport Relief!’
Invent a sport
In Kirkcaldy, the Cubs of the 14th Fife have already done their Sport Relief activity. They made up their own games, using the sports equipment the Group has collected over the years with Sainsbury's Active Kids. Then they paid £2 for the privilege of playing them. Some of the creative options were dodgeball with hockey sticks, target games knocking down cones with beanbags and catching a ball in a mitt that the Cubs had thrown over the beams in the meeting place ceiling. Leader Fiona West enthused, 'Sport Relief fitted in really nicely with some of the badges the Cubs are doing, and counted towards the Creative Challenge. They would play games all night if we let them!'
