Support for Haiti Scouts

15/01/2010

Scouts from all over the world are rallying to offer aid and support to their counterparts in Haiti. Donations are flooding in and a bank account and online contribution facility have been set up by the World Scout Bureau.

A volunteer cooperation specialist from Scouts et Guides de France (Scouts and Guides of France) is also currently on the ground in Port-au-Prince to coordinate all international Scouting aid.

Make a difference

UK Scouts have already mobilised to do what they can. Ayers Explorer Scout Unit raised £50 almost immediately at their first meeting of the year. As news of the devastation following Tuesday’s earthquake broke, Unit Leader Eddie Ward contacted each member inviting them to donate.

'This is a tiny drop in the ocean with regard to the relief effort,” he said. 'But I was very pleased with the response to a message sent only hours earlier. Furthermore we can be sure that our donation will make a difference.'

There are around 30,000 Scouts in Haiti. Although contact with them has been limited thus far, it is believed that many are acting as an essential relay between the emergency NGO’s and the local population – reprising their actions of 2008, when the Caribbean island was hit by a hurricane.

Solidarity

A message of solidarity has been sent on behalf of Scouts all over the world. Ayers Explorer Scout Rachel Bradley echoed that sentiment saying: 'It is important that, as the largest youth organisation in the world with Scouts in nearly every country, we use that network to support others in need. Hopefully we will be able to add to our initial donation.'

The account set up by the World Scout Bureau guarantees the use of its donations. Food aid, hygienic products, medicine and materials of first necessity will be purchased by the Haitian Scouts in order to limit the cost of transportation and storage. The action will thus be safer and faster.
