2,000 Scouts brave cold for rugby showdown

13/01/2010

Leicestershire Scouts organised a fun day and family outing at Leicester Tigers’ Welford Road ground in chilly conditions, with over two thousand young people and their parents taking advantage of discounted prices.

The Scouts watched Leicester trounce London rivals Wasps 34-8 and created a buzz of their own among Tigers fans, with activities and information about Scouting on hand for supporters.

The event coincided with a new group booking scheme, which was certainly popular as 58 local Scout Groups came along in freezing conditions. As well as the rugby, the capacity crowd were entertained by two bands, circus performers and a five metre bouldering wall. Jez Chapman, who organised the activities said ‘Scouting is all about getting out and doing lots of activities. I was sat behind ten Beavers who didn’t shut up for the whole game shouting for the Tigers!’

Raising the profile

Recruiting adults to get involved in Scouting is one of the priorities for The Scout Association nationwide, and no less so in Leicestershire. County Commissioner Byron Chatburn was impressed with the public’s level of interest in Scouting, despite the arctic weather. ‘Comments inside the stadium showed that we certainly increased the awareness of Scouting and one of the great successes was to get so many parents involved with a Scouting activity. We’re already planning a repeat of the event, and talking to Leicester City Football Club too. It will be good to come back in the summer months!’

Ellie, 12, a Scout in Quorn, said, ‘Even though it was freezing, the game was as enjoyable as the half-time hot chocolate!’

Family fun

The number of parents attending with their children was a promising sign. Family involvement is a key part of Scouting’s plan to recruit more adult volunteers to help bring Scouting to more young people. The Big Adventure is one way of getting more parents involved and starts on 1 May.

Leicestershire Scouts are going in the right direction, as Jez Chapman noted. ‘We have stamped Scouting on the public’s mind and hopefully it will strengthen Scouting in the long term.’
