Winter adventure in the snow

11/01/2010

Last weekend 2,500 Scouts from across the UK welcomed in a new year of adventure. The Scouts from as far as Devon and North Wales braved sub zero temperatures and fields of snow to camp at Gilwell Park Activity Centre, the home of Scouting and outdoor adventure.

Every January, Winter Camp provides the opportunity for Scouts to take part in over 70 adventurous and fun activities ranging from abseiling to zorbing.

Over 1,800 boys and girls aged between 10-18 along with over 600 adult Leaders enjoyed the experience of sleeping in tents for two nights, cooking on open fires and enjoying a packed snow filled programme led by a team of 200 adult volunteers.

Grace Denny age 15 from Enfield, North London said: 'It was amazing! Adventures like this make me feel so alive.'

Chief Scout Bear Grylls, who is well known for his adventures around the world, said: 'Every young person deserves an adventure. It's great to see that so many young people are getting stuck into adventurous activities like climbing, abseiling, quad biking and having a go on the high ropes, all in the coldest month of the year.'

David Morris drove his North Wales based Explorer Scout Unit to the event on Friday evening. He said 'We had a brilliant time. Trying out all these activities with the Scouts was great. So if you fancy climbing or zorbing and want to meet some amazing people why not give Scouting a try?'

What a fantastic event. 28 Scouts and 5 Leaders traveled from Stroud and Tetbury District in Gloucestershire and had a chilly, but really enjoyable experience.

Well done, but don't forget all the other scout groups camping around the country. Thriftwood held the pedal car Olympics and although we had last minute transport problems, we still went camping. Brooke and Poringland Scouts

A small group of 4th Epping Scouts and U.N.I.T Explorers travelled all the way from... Epping. It was a gruelling twenty minute journey in the minibus and more than forty five minutes after leaving HQ we had finally managed to set up our site. Well done to everyone who took part. Did we ever get an official minimum temperature? I was told by someone that it was -7C on Friday - inside their tent!

I think this is a great adventure but also would like to say how fantastic the Kent County Pedal Car Championships for Scouts at Thriftwood the same weekend was a huge success.

Why do none of the interviews mention trek carts.
They were by far the best activity!!!
