Snow rescue efforts boosted by Scout assistance

06/01/2010

Scout volunteers in the Midlands have been coming to the aid of local people as weather conditions worsen. The Nottinghamshire Emergency Scout Support Team (NESST) are providing medicines and supplies across the region and assisting the efforts of local services to deal with the cold snap.

NESST consists of 32 volunteer Scout Leaders from across Nottinghamshire. The group was mobilised by the county council to help children who had become trapped in their school.

Using two Land Rovers, NESST delivered blankets and sleeping bags to the Elizabethan High School in Retford. It is also supplying medical supplies to vulnerable and elderly people in communities throughout the area.

Community contribution

‘We’re just an ordinary group of people doing something extra,’ said volunteer team leader Keith Morris. ‘This is an example of how Scouting contributes to our local communities and helps others in need.’

Drivers who may become stranded will also be catered for as NESST is delivering sleeping bags and blankets to a motorist rest centre in Ollerton. In addition, Nottinghamshire Scouts has offered its Walesby Scout Activity Centre to the local emergency planning team as an accommodation site.

Scouting volunteers

The volunteers who make up the Scout Support Team are drawn from all walks of life including doctors, office staff and construction workers. Their contribution is easing the burden on the council, police and fire services as more snow is predicted across the UK.

Volunteer Scout Leaders dedicate their time and abilities to assist Scouting all over the UK. They learn new skills and contribute to their local community in the process. Although many are parents of youth members, there is no requirement to have links with, or previous experience of, Scouting and opportunities are numerous regardless of age, gender, abilities or skills.
