Scouts in record tree planting attempt

01/12/2009

Scouts across the UK are preparing to create history by helping to set a new world record this weekend. Participating groups have answered the call to plant more than 653,000 trees in just one hour at multiple sites.

The Tree O’Clock record attempt, backed by the Woodland Trust and the BBC, will take place on Saturday (5 December) between 11am and 12pm. Troop Leader Mark Tipuric’s Group at Llangollen in Wales will be playing their part by planting hundreds of oak trees in Foel Friog. According to Mark it is ‘a great way for our Scouts to work towards their Community Challenge and Forester badges.’

The natural environment

Meanwhile, Scout Leader Jack Greengrass is looking forward to joining in at Hainault Forest.  ‘Events like this not only help nature, but promote the way forward,’ he said. As he is currently studying to be a tree surgeon, Jack has a keen awareness of the importance of this particular world record.

‘I have always had an interest in trees and woodland,’ he continues, ‘but my studies have given me a real love for the natural environment. This is the only world we live in and we not only owe it to ourselves but to people in the future to stop exploiting it.’

Nationwide challenge

This UK challenge will involve people, schools and community groups doing everything from planting orchards to a single tree in their garden. Participants can register online to get free resources and support.

This is not the first time that Scouts have got involved in such a project. During 2007, The Scout Association teamed up with the Woodland Trust to offer Scouts the chance to plant trees as part of our Centenary celebrations.

This is going to be a brilliant media opportunity to show that Scouts really care about protecting the environment and want to help to make the world a better place.
