Scouts in flood rescue and relief efforts
25/11/2009
Scouts in Cumbria are using their skills and abilities to help communities affected by the recent floods.
Among those playing a major role is Mike Davis, Assistant District Commissioner Scouts for Duddon and High Furness. As a Team Leader with Bay Search and Rescue, he has supported Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service as part of the Technical Rescue Team in Cockermouth.
‘I was the driver of our ATERV (all-terrain emergency response vehicle),’ Mike explained. ‘We were responsible for checking the water levels – operating throughout the night.’

As they had the only vehicle, which could access the main street, Mike’s team performed welfare checks on residents as well as delivering food and removing doctors’ computers. ‘It was a hard 26 hours but the things I’ve learned and done during my time in Scouting helped enormously,’ he said.
And Mike’s not alone, as two former 1st Grange and Cartmel Scouts are also part of the team.
Meanwhile Scouts in the Reivers District are offering advice to fellow Scouts and will be collecting gifts at their forthcoming carol service to distribute to children affected by flooding.
Scouting’s strength lies in its grassroots. Local groups identify and work with young people in need. The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for young people aged 6-25.
