Young people share insight at national youth forum
23/11/2009
Over 30 young people aged 18-25 gathered in Oxford for the annual Insight event, an opportunity for younger adult Members to discuss their views about several aspects of Scouting’s work, and contribute towards the Movement’s vision.
The participants, drawn from diverse parts of the UK, quickly got down to work, looking at The Scout Association’s vision to 2018, which UK Chief Commissioner Wayne Bulpitt guided them through. It was to set the tone for the event, which serves to involve young people in the decisions made in Scouting at the top level.
‘Feedback from Insight 2008 made a significant contribution to the work we’ve already done on the vision,’ Wayne told participants, who also did sessions on Scout Active Support, diversity, Scouting skills and moving on.
Moving moments
There was also plenty of opportunity to get inspired, as Tom Henderson gave a moving speech about Shelterbox, the disaster relief charity he founded nearly ten years ago.
The Scout Association and Shelterbox will be working in partnership in 2010, as Tom told how impressed he has been by Scouts who work on the ground when disaster strikes to pitch tents and distribute aid when Shelterbox arrive on the scene.
Getting Quizzy
It wasn’t all hard work, and fun was to be had both during the sessions and in the evening. A mammoth quiz pitted the teams against each other, including a hilarious game of mallett’s mallet and a round in which the teams tried their best to recreate a Thanksgiving dinner using only their bodies.
Sharing ideas
One of the key outcomes of the weekend is that the Members got to influence how Scouting is represented at the British Youth Council. Delegates to the BYC asked what the priorities of The Scout Association should be, and the views put across will guide the work of the Scout representatives for the next 12 months.
One of the event organising team, Steve Moysey, reflected that the event had been a success. ‘It’s been great to see everyone taking part, and I think everyone will take something away with them from Insight. Their enthusiasm and willingness to get stuck in and work together created such a buzz, and will reap benefits for the whole Movement.’
Scouting for boys and girls
Scouting is the largest mixed youth movement in the UK. Across the UK it provides adventurous activities week in and week out to over 400,000 young people aged 6-25.
Scouting has been working to put young people at the centre of all it does. The past few years has seen more and more opportunity for young people to have their say on how they want to do their Scouting.
Young people and giving them the chance to express their views is firmly at the centre of Scouting's plans for the future, as can be seen in The Scout Association's vision to 2018.
